I once chartered a banca in the philippines and the 5 crew were all wearing these gumboots . There boat wasn't exactly new and when I pointed out that IF we sink them damn gumboots gonna be real difficult to remove underwater and will indeed send you plummeting further under water. They didn't get it. Later on in the day we stopped for lunch and 1 crew member decided it would be a good spot for dynamite fishing. Unfortunately the sanmig bottle that was his chosen fishing apparatus went of in his hand. Back to town we went. As fast as that banca could go

^ In a previous life I used to do match fishing in the UK... coarse fishing for competition and you are spaced at 20 metre intervals along a river bank. I was told one story about a match on the River Axe in Somerset which is steep-sided and deep. A guy wearing waders slipped in, and despite having fishermen 20 metres either side, was carried under before they could reach him to help. He drowned. Waders or wellies are lethal in deep water.
