I was preparing some food in the kitchen to day when I became aware of a strange (but nice) sensation around the left foot area.



Yes, Maya was licking my left big toe.

This brought back vivid memories of our wonderful dog Dan licking my left big toe a few years ago, after the toe nail became infected and nearly dropped off after cleaning out the pond. Dogs can smell infection and love to offer assistance by use of their infection-busting saliva.

We had a big rain storm the other night and as I was inspecting for damage, I slipped and twatted my left big toe against a wall. The toe has been throbbing ever since and and the nail has gone a bit black and started to weep a bit. Songkran ain't the best of times to head to hospital but also I reckon it will come good... I certainly hope so as next week I head to work and will be expected to wear proper shoes and maybe even safety boots. That will hurt... bare feet and flip-flops have been no problem.

Anyway, Maya was taking no chances with her Master and was doing her best.

Ain't dogs wonderful animals!



I took my toes outside into better light for a check-up and to be honest, other than a cracked nail the left big toe didn't look appreciably worse than the undamaged right, but I took no chances and re-applied a liberal helping of Betadine.



It bloody hurts though. I hope it gets better soon.

Every one of my dogs has been giving my toe an inspection today and I'm considering a hospital visit tomorrow... the last thing I want is to arrive offshore next week and then get a medical problem. Especially considering that I may have to wear safety boots.

all my life i have loved dogs and always make a point of going up to them and attempting to stroke or pat. never have i had a dog back away or become aggressive. if they show reluctance i will always persevere until the dog comes to me.

3 years ago shortly before my operation for cancer in the uk i was walking in the park and a small dog on a leash with his owner about 25 yards away walking towards me suddenly stopped and would go no further. as i continued walking this dog backed away and gave me a kind of death stare. as i approached closer his obvious alarm increased and he growled.

i chatted with the owner who said that he has never done that before, he is normally very friendly and loves to be patted and stroked by people when out. i thought nothing of it, maybe some scent on my shoe alarmed him, but later it occurred to me that he probably detected my cancer.

when i was a kid we had a dog as a pet, one time i had a septic ingrown toenail and the dog would always find it interesting and sniff and lick at it. i never photographed the event though.

^ Fascinating stuff Tax, and I believe that this kind of thing will be used more and more in the medical field as humans increasingly become aware of the sensitivity of dogs, and many other animals, in detecting cancers and other illnesses. Is it just the sense of smell or other senses that we're not aware of?

Betcha wish you photographed that sniff and lick now! What a scoop for this thread that would have been, all these years later!

Reading the article below it appears the real reason your dogs lick your feet is because they are a salty treat like Yogis bollocks and the webbed things resemble that of a duck

I agree with Dill....it's a myth. In fact dogs have odd bacteria in their mouths to which we can react very badly.

I think the myth started with stories during WW2 (and probably long before) in which dogs successfully cleaned out infected wounds. Just very good luck that the soldiers did not die. In fact some may have...we just didn't hear about them as people would have said they simply died from their wounds. I read a story about a POW in the Philippines who survived by having his wound cleaned out by a dog.

Dogs are also known to be able to sniff out Parkinsons...there was a recent article about it if anyone wants to Google.

As the Wifi was so bad on the boat during my last trip, and TeakDoor appeared to be down most of the time, I'm just catching up on a few posts.

Can I just say that to my knowledge, Yogi doesn't 'mouth rape' the others, whatever that entails and I have no reason to believe that his bollocks are particularly salty, either. To be honest, after a slightly dodgy start with the pack he has turned into a valued member and is a real peacemaker amongst the others.

But anyway, on my return home, interestingly enough I have discovered that your toe nails record episodes in your life, in the same way that the rings in a tree record the different seasonal events during a tree's life.

Here you can clearly see when my six weeks of nightshifts offshore Norway started. If I go onto two week rotations I reckon I could get a nice striped effect going.



My port side big toenail is a disaster area and having to wear proper shoes with socks for my long haul journey home pretty well finished it off. It's no longer infected but now is wobbly and almost completely detached and is just hanging on by the offside corner. I can't seem to summon the courage to just pull it off and hope that one morning I'll wake up and it will have just disappeared.

Maya has already shown interest and maybe one of the dogs will take me by surprise and pull it off... they seem to have a natural instinct for such things.
