My brothers have been there 3-4 times each and they have always told me the same as the above about the police shaking you down after the dealers sell to you, and then nod to the police or make a quick call. In fact a cruise liner that is there daily warns it's passengers not to leave the tourist areas that are protected when smoking due to quick nature of the police to make arrests on drug charges outside tourist areas. My brother said the charges are similar to public intoxication if you are smoking on the streets, and since you own no land in Jamaica you need to be very careful about smoking at all. Funny how it is legal yet illegal at the same time in some cases.
Robbery is another very big warning you get if you are heading outside the tourist areas. Muggings are regular occurrences. Be very careful. The snorkeling is said to be some of the finest in the world. While you are there be sure to buy some local coffee, and the rum is like $3USD a 1/5. I like the banana rum if you feel generous.
