Revealed: food bank shortages expected to hit Washington state by mid-April | US news | The GuardianAgencies and organisations tasked with feeding children, the poor and the elderly in Washington state during the coronavirus crisis will experience shortages of food and supplies as early as mid-April, according to state government emergency planning documents obtained by the Guardian.
A 27 March situation report (SitRep) document produced by the Unified Command of Washington’s State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) projects that a combination of acute demand at food banks and schools, supply problems for food and cleaning supplies, plus staffing shortages, will mean government and NGOs will struggle to provide for hungry people whose incomes have disappeared as the state’s economy stutters.
In quarantine with an abuser: surge in domestic violence reports linked to coronavirus | US news | The GuardianOne caller to a domestic violence hotline reported that her husband threatened to throw her out into the street if she coughed. Another reported they had been strangled by their partner, but feared going to the hospital because of the threat of coronavirus. An immunocompromised man from Pennsylvania called in after his emotionally abusive girlfriend began hiding cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer from him.
With more than three-quarters of the US population told to stay home to stem the pandemic’s spread, nowhere is safe for victims of intimate partner violence. A self-quarantine puts them in perpetual proximity to their abuser. Leaving exposes them not just to a deadly virus but a world that has largely closed its doors.
Activists worldwide have reported an alarming rise in domestic violence cases since the start of coronavirus-related quarantines. In Wuhan in February, while the province was under strict lockdown, one police station, reported a threefold increase in complaints compared with the same period last year. Advocates are concerned that this bleak reality has reached the United States, where experts say one in four women and one in seven men face physical violence by a partner at some point in their lifetimes.

Montreal is the epicenter in Canada of Covid-19.
It's actually a Lounge thread: "the place for fun, a laugh and a joke and a bit of light hearted banter"
But perhaps Speakers Corner is better for the thread if it's all about a message.
Anyway, has anybody seen any rainbows being painted in Thailand? Or is this current rainbow painting thing just (or mainly) a western invented and followed thing?
I haven't seen any in Thailand myself.
^ go on Nev, you know you want to
I don't want to paint a rainbow, NPT. People mught feel it's a hopeless situation in Canada, or Italy or the UK, but for me here in Thailand, I don't feel that at all.
How is it for you in the UK, NPT? Do you feel a sense of hopelessness and does seeing pitures of rainbows make you feel better about yourself or the threat of Covid-19?
I wouldn't say i feel hopelessness, worrying times yes and who knows for how long. Two weeks into this isolation thingy and i relish the days i am asked to go into work. I am getting a bit bored of wrapping my extinguished cider bottles in toilet paper to stop them clinking when i pop them in the recycling bin however.
Here's a thought: maybe curtail the drinking (and subsequent posting of belligerent bollocks on the forum) then?Originally Posted by NamPikToot
