    I love my wifes family...NOT....

The last 4 days have been a nightmare, my wifes younger brother "borrowed" his fathers car 2 month ago, it wasent paid for yet, but the son promised to pay the monthly installments... Then last Friday the collecter of bad debts came by and wanted to take the car back to the finance company, well that couldent happen since nobody knew where the car were or the son for that matter. After a few hundred phone-calls they finaly tracked him down, he dident have the car anymore, he had to leave it in Aran, after a visit to the casino, there dident go as planned, so he needed 77.000 baht to get the car back. So, big family meeting (I stayed as far away as posible) and they agreed to help him, he was very happy and told them to transfere the my via ATM, but the family would like to see the car first, before handing over the money....The son said that it was not posible, only when they had the money they would release the car.......Now they are having another big meeting, and I'm enjoying a coold beer......If they cant smell the BS in his story, then no wonder that they never can manage to save just a little money.

It may not be BS, but a tricky situation anyway.
The car may be 'lost' whether they'd help out with 77k or not.
Boy, am I glad we don't have probs like this in the family...
Me missus got her head screwed on when it comes to dealing with relatives.

^^ Probably Si Sa Ket... I had an early girlfriend from there... They have a reputation in Thailand for being accomplished liars & con-artists.

The 'brother' is hoping the falang ATM will come to his 'rescue'... wait & see...

^ 13 years ago, she was a recptionist at C/N in Bangkok, and I worked for the same company, cant use the bar-girl thing here, we have been thru a lot, up's and downs, having our own business. My wife and I agree, her father should report the car stolen, and let the son deal with his own problems. But I think you know how Thais do, when it comes this far

Not in this life-time, been here way to long to fall for that shit, if he's tough enough to gamble, then he better be equaly strong to clean up the mess he made, the alternative is not very attractive...

most of us, by now have learned how to deal with these childish attempts to squeeze a buck out of a farang. what beats me is the number of thai families that themselves get suckered, time and time again by the same family member, sometimes getting bailed out by some gullible farang, sometimes not. do they never learn? i am betting that in this case, the family will borrow the money to get him out of the shit, and he will simply pull a similar stunt a few months down the line. you are lucky to have a wife who understands that the little prick should suffer the consequences, and perhaps learn a valuable lesson in life.
    cheers

Dalton, if you fail to help the family will this not cause problems ? Thais have a tendancy to side with family so could this effect your marriage ?

^ This is ! exactly ! what I'm sure they would be hoping for - deep down. The falang knight covered in green-backs rides to the rescue at the 11th hour.

I didn't read anywhere, that they had asked him for anything.Sounds like the family have enough smarts, not to front any money until the car is sighted, and it sounds that Dalton has enough nouse to keep out of the way and let them work it out themselves.

You are not responsible. If somebody asks, it is against your religion to help stupid people. To come off as a bit nicer, offer him a free lesson in cause and effect theory though.

Sure I love you "honey" but that does not include the other 985 members of the family.....You kao jai mai ???
Just kidding, we have been here before with them, the thing is that he might go to jail for this, or an early exit from this world, but as the meeting progress, it looks like he is shit out of luck......

I hear what you are saying, as I mentioned above, we have been here before, we earn our money with farming, just like most Thais, and its a hard way, you get nothing for free, and we will both be dammed if we are going to pay him out of gamble debts. We had issues before, but we dont back down, to crap like this, we will help with education and stuff like that, but not there usual BS, it dosent stand a chance...

That was there first idea, until they found out how much they would have to pay, including interest, monthly car payments, for a car there might not be there, so the weight has changed...

If they're from Si Sa Ket your mrs will be one of a brood of eleven or so. It wont hurt much if one of them disapears down a hole. Isan funerals are quite fun if you like lao kao and fake tears.

Wouldn't be surprised if he sold the car to a cop in exchange for a kickback, hence the "possible jail" family-sympathy con. Who knows!

You tell 'em, Dalton. I'm from farming stock meself (well, I did grow up in the city, but summers and weekends at the homestead); gratifying most times, but bladdy hard work. Green on ya. Let us know how the pow-wow went.

Well, the latest update is that they are not going to pay a dime, unless they see the car first(so far so good) but they still hang on the monthly payments since the police will not accept the car as being stolen, the son needs to report it stolen, because he were the last one to see the car, so as for now the ball is in his hands, interesting to see what he will do.

Good on the family. It's nice to see them making their children face the music for once instead of the usual financial bale out.
