Red X to stop engine knock

We already have excellent what's that car type thread but a few memories from village store/petrol /pump/bookies/bar so common in rural areas before giant corps took over.

    Those were the days-images-jpg

You would never travel far without a tow rope, starting handle and the winter de icer rug and thermos and this

    Those were the days-images-jpg

Living in rural LOS still seems like a time warp the family store cum garage where you can drink a beer while wife buys veg noodles and car parts, like living in 1960s but with net online banking and sat TV , wonderful

Drove the Mulsanne Straight over 100 one dark night (it's a normal public rd outside the race)

    Still knocking about somewhere

Both grandad and dad played at top level, I only played county sevens hooker, but had the joy to see this at the Arms

The full match is here, with a lovely rendition of Sosban fach (the little saucepan)

Every Friday night I would turn the meter 180 deg, same fittings on each side, kept spare washers, reversed the meter had very low gas bills and a hot house!
Had to remember to turn it back the right way Sunday night

Glad to be of service, and just think with modern dental techniques like implants you'll never have to have your food chewed for you like some of us do.

Remember shouting at the screen on a Saturday, "He's gonna be Bono!" with my mum chirping in with a "nah, obviously he's Dean Martin".

    "Tonight Matthew, I'm gonna be..."

eg, petrol bowsers consisting of a hand lever pump and a large (maybe 10 gallons?) glass tank that gravity fed your fill-up.

The airport fire truck (landrover with fire extinguishers) chasing the cows off the field before any plane could land.
Getting the cane in school and detention after school.
Girls that put out because you were the man and you'd bought dinner.
Simplex boat engines that you had to roll the flywheel to start.
Doing your banking before 4 pm Friday or else you'd have to wait until 9 am Monday.
Buses that stopped anywhere on the route, including so a passenger could have a quick chat with a relative or buy from a roadside stall.
    ....
