Israeli held in slaying of countryman

Officers escort Shimon Biton, 50, to the Bang Bua Thong police station in Nonthaburi on Saturday to face murder charges

Rescue workers remove the body of former Israeli policeman Eliyahu Cohen, 63, from a rented house in Bang Bua Thong district on Saturday.

An Israeli man faces a murder charge after police discovered body of his compatriot, a former police officer, encased in newly poured concrete at a house in Bang Bua Thong district in Nonthaburi.

Shimon Biton, 50, was apprehended at the rented house in the Pattrawan housing estate in tambon Laharn on Saturday after the body of Eliyahu Cohen, 63, was found buried under a staircase.

Police said Mr Biton, 50, confessed to having killed his Israeli friend in a fit of jealousy on Tuesday after learning that the latter had had an affair with his girlfriend.

The investigation began on Friday, after officials from the Israeli embassy filed a report with the Crime Suppression Division that Mr Cohen had disappeared from the Thana City Hotel in Bang Phlad district of Bangkok.

The embassy was responding to a request from Wathinee Peerek, 31, to help find Mr Cohen, who had not been seen since Tuesday evening.

The focus of the investigation soon turned to Mr Biton after officers discovered that he had used a credit card to buy packs of mothballs, black plastic bags and razors at a department store in the Rattanathibet area and a travelling bag at a department store in Chaeng Watthana. He and his 17-year-old son had rented the house in Bang Bua Thong for about one year.

Police on Saturday went to the house to interrogate Mr Biton about the disappearance of his friend. They also found a Toyota car with a Chon Buri licence plate belonging to Mr Cohen abandoned on a road, about 10 kilometres from Mr Biton’s house.

Initially, Mr Biton denied any knowledge of the disappearance of his compatriot. But police found bloodstains on the hinge of a door and detected a strong odour inside the house. A closer inspection revealed freshly poured concrete near the bathroom under the stairs.

When police broke up the concrete, they found the body of the missing Israeli man.

Mr Biton is being held in police custody at the Bang Bua Thong police station.

i must say, it is very considerate of the blue suede shoe to step up the plate and play the white man here.

just as the recent "body in the freezer" case disappears from the news, it is good for teak door ghouls to have another gory textbook murder presented to us to sink our teeth into.

I wonder what reaction the British or Aus. Embassy would make when told that someone had been missing for a few days?

To be fair, I would be pretty pissed off if a guy 13 years older got a leg over my GF.

So, do we assume the woman who went to the Israeli embassy was the two-timing hussy? (In which case she obviously preferred the older guy).Or was the old lecher also a 2-timer (and the woman was his bit)?

    Israelis look after their own.
But you make a good point, and it is impressive for any embassy to go to the police after so little time. Makes me wonder if there is some history to this.

Identity of Israeli who murdered ex-wife in Thailand released
Cohen spent eight years in prison
however in 2012 the King of Thailand pardoned him.

Foul play was suspected after the body of an Israeli man who murdered his ex-wife in Thailand was recently found buried under concrete in Bangkok, Army Radio reported Saturday.

Authorities later identified the victim as 62-year-old Eli Cohen, a retired police officer.

Two Israeli citizens, a father and son, were arrested by Thai police under suspicion of being related to the murder. The father is known to be related to drug smuggling, and was charged in the past with trying to conceal the body of another murdered Israeli in Thailand.

Eli Cohen, the 62-year-old murdered man, was convicted of murdering his wife in 2004 and sentenced to life in prison.

Cohen bought a one-way ticket for his ex-wife to fly to Bangkok and within 24 hours murdered her in his hotel him. He dumped her mutilated body in a river in the city and called the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok to report the missing person.

Cohen spent eight years in prison, however in 2012 the King of Thailand pardoned him.

Thai King pardons Israeli who murdered ex-wife

Man who murdered ex-wife in Bangkok to return to Israel in 6 months; Yishai denies involvement in securing pardon.

    Dead man walking ,

8 years after he was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his ex-wife Carol and dumping her dismembered body in a Bangkok river, Israeli Eli Cohen is set to be released from prison in six months, following a pardon by the King of Thailand, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed this week.

Carol’s family reacted to the news with outrage this week, and has accused the Interior Ministry of involvement in the pardon, a charge Minister Eli Yishai has denied outright.

Carol’s mother, Rivka Amsalem, told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday that she heard the news that her daughter’s murderer had been pardoned the night earlier when she received a call from a reporter from Ma'ariv, and not from any Israeli official.

“It’s a very terrible feeling to know he’ll be released. How could it be that someone murders his ex-wife in such a brutal and terrible way, and then cuts her up and throws her into a river, can be pardoned?” Amsalem said.

Amsalem said that on Tuesday she was contacted personally by Eli Yishai’s spokesman, who denied reports that Yishai pulled strings to secure Cohen’s release.

“There is still something fishy (masriach) here; there are many other Israelis sitting in Thai prisons for drugs and they aren’t given pardons but this person is? How does it make any sense?” Amsalem added.

Now that her daughter’s killer is set to be a free man and could very well return to Israel in May, Amsalem said, “I don’t want him in Israel, that’s my war now, to make sure he never comes back here. I want the country to help me fix this problem they caused.”

“He [Cohen] has nothing to look for here [in Israel], he should spend the rest of his life in the galut (exile).”

In February 2004, Cohen bought a one-way ticket for his ex-wife to fly her out to Bangkok, saying he wanted to spend some time with her in the city. Within the first 24 hours after her arrival Cohen murdered her in his hotel room and crammed her mutilated body into a suitcase, which he threw in a river in the city. Cohen then called the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok to report his wife missing, but was almost instantly tapped by police as the chief suspect.

Following reports that Eli Yishai was involved in securing the pardon, the minister’s office sent out a statement on Tuesday denying the reports, but adding that Yishai has worked on behalf of young Israelis serving drug offenses in Thailand and India, in order to find a way for them to serve their sentences back in Israel where the conditions of detention are more humane.

“The minister has never knowingly worked for the sake of releasing a murderer and if it turns out he was involved in such instances it was a mistake and the instance must be checked. The minister believes that the place of a murderer, any murderer, is in prison for the rest of their lives,” the statement continued.

^ I could suggest because they have a bigger chip on their shoulder they are more parochial and loyal to their citizens, but here I get the feeling that the chap (victim) may be special to them and so they employed stronger diplomatic muscle.

Police hunt for Israeli murder suspect's missing Thai wife

Police are investigating an Israeli, detained for the murder of a countryman, over the disappearance of his Thai wife and have also sought court approval to arrest the man's 17-year-old son.

The investigation into the woman's disappearance was launched after her father reported he had not had any contact with her since last year.

Anand Sang-urai, 62, filed a complaint with Bang Bua Thong police asking them to find out whether Nantiya Sang-urai, 37, was still alive.

According to Mr Anand, Ms Nantiya lived with her husband Shimon Biton, 50, now a murder suspect, and their 17-year-old son in a rented house in Nonthaburi’s Bang Bua Thong district last year.

When his daughter disappeared and Mr Anand could not contact her, Mr Biton claimed Ms Nantiya was arrested by Lao authorities at the Nong Khai border checkpoint for possession of narcotics.

Mr Anand asked Mr Biton to take him to where his daughter was detained. But the man left the house with his son without telling him where they were going. He inquired about Ms Nantiya’s whereabouts with the Lao embassy, but officials told him they could not find her arrest record.

Mr Anand, who owns a food shop in Bangkok’s Bag Kae district, said he came to Bang Bua Thong police station on Saturday after learning from media reports that Mr Biton became a murder suspect and was detained there. He said he was suspicious about several issues, including Ms Nantiya’s son claiming he did not know him or even his own mother.

“My very own nephew who I helped raise when he was very young now says he does not know me and his own mother who raised him for many years. This is impossible,” Mr Anand told Thairath.

Nonthaburi police commander Pol Maj Gen Susak Prakkamakul said Mr Anand was being questioned further to gather more evidence about his daughter’s disappearance. He was to accompany police to his daughter's Bang Bua Thong home.

Mr Biton was arrested during a raid on his rented home in Bang Bua Thong on Saturday after police discovered dismembered body parts inside a wall.

Police identified the slain man as Eliyahu Cohen, a 63-year-old former Israeli police officer who had been reported missing on Wednesday from a condominium in Bangkok’s Bang Phlat district.

Mr Biton, who was in the house during the raid, allegedly told police he killed Cohen out of jealousy after discovering his girlfriend had been involved in an intimate relationship with him.

Pol Maj Gen Susak said the suspect’s son told police he was at the scene when the killing took place but did not dare to look.

Police have sought a warrant from the Juvenile and Family Court to arrest the teen on charges of collaborating to commit murder and concealment of a body.

Thai Court Sentences Israeli to Death for Murder Fellow Countryman in Bangkok

BANGKOK – A court in Thailand Thursday sentenced to death an Israeli former police informant who admitted to murdering another Israeli man in a fit of jealousy.

Shimon Biton, 50, who has served time in both Israeli and Thai jails, admitted to killing 62-year-old Eliyahu Cohen and burying parts of his body in freshly poured concrete under the stairs in his Bangkok home last November.

Biton was arrested along with his 17-year-old son when police found traces of blood in their house and then discovered some of Cohen’s remains in concrete at the pair’s home, and some in a suitcase also discovered at the house.

Biton, who has a long criminal record, told police he had killed Cohen, who was reported to be a good friend of his, in a fit of jealousy after discovering that he had had an affair with Biton’s girlfriend.

Cohen, a retired police officer who had been living in Bangkok, was reported missing by his family, prompting a search by police.

In the 1990s, Biton was found guilty of robbing an old lady and attacking her with a chair, he was sentenced to five years in jail, but managed to escape before entering prison.

He was caught four years later in Belgium and extradited to Israel where he served two years, then fled to Thailand during a furlough.

He was eventually extradited back to Israel after spending time in jail in Thailand for concealing a body and became a police informant following his release from jail two years later.

Biton has 30 days to appeal the verdict. His son will be transferred to a juvenile court for sentencing.

That does sound like a joke :
How did the Jewish guy get caught for killing his wife on holiday ?
He only brought her a one way ticket
