Teacher said to flog 7-year-old is 'absent' from school

SURIN - The 57-year-old teacher who allegedly badly beat a seven-year-old pupil over a pen was absent from work on Friday, while his superior was ordered to finish his investigation into the case next week.

Pol Lt Col Porawet Krawenkit, an interrogator from the Sangkha police station, arrived at Ban Huai Poon School in Sangkha district to question staff after the boy's family accused teacher Sangworn Harnpitak of brutally beating the grade one pupil with a tree branch.

The officer did not see Mr Sangworn as he was absent from work, but questioned other teachers who witnessed the incident. Pol Lt Col Porawet said he would issue a summons for Mr Sangworn.

The interrogation began after the boy's grandmother posted a picture on Facebook showing numerous welts on his back and arms. The post was later shared via social media.

It was reported that the boy took Mr Sangworn's pen without his permission. The boy later returned the pen, as another teacher advised, but Mr Sangworn allegedly beat the young boy until another teacher came to his rescue.

Khampoon Boonchern, director of primary education in Surin, visited the boy's family and gave them 3,000 baht to boost morale. He said he ordered the school's head to finish his investigation into the case by early next week so that disciplinary and criminal actions could be taken.

Pornnapa Meechuen, a local social development and human security official, visited the boy's family and found nine family members lived in a small one-storey house, walled and roofed with steel sheets, and slept on wooden planks.

The official gave them 1,000 baht and some consumer products as initial assistance, and promised to arrange additional social welfare support for the family.

Oom Phosarn, the boy's maternal grandmother, said the boy had just moved from Pattaya, where he had lived with his paternal grandmother, a construction worker. The boy had just started his first school term in the Surin school.

She also said that other pupils had bullied her grandson, staining his school uniform with oil paints and painting his face like a cat.

I trust the many teachers and head teachers i know emphatically.

This is Thailand so different, shame as the child comes from a broken dirt poor family and is picked on at school and what does his teacher do??

The teacher(if you can call him that) is supposed to help and assist the seven year old but instead beats him.

    Makes my blood boil..

100 to 1 that the director and the school officials will assess the family as too poor to kick up much fuss and use the "He's nearly at retirement age, so lets just drop it" excuse after a paltry compensation from the teacher.

teachers are the same the world over, good and bad.... imoh 99% are child minders, no more no less. very few teachers in the profession. in my own education there were three or four, teachers out of 40 or so school masters. same in my children's schooling, same my grandchildren's schooling same my great grandchildren's schooling.... out of the average class size of 40 six will do ok naturally,,, that seems to satisfy the authorities and the child minders. if any authority really wants to educate the masses they would cut the classes by 50%.... we all know that aint gonna appin.

Poor Kid... I hope he doesn't develop trust issues in the future. To be bullied by authority and by someone who was suppose to be watching your back....... That's rough........

The boy's living condition is heartbreaking. Hope they help him and his family. And I mean, not just material help, but something better like a job, livelihood/a source of income.
I am so unlucky that if I fall into a barrel full of D*ick**s, I'd come out sucking my own thumb!

Children should by reading, writing full sentences and learning their times tables by age 7.
That's the curriculum in the UK at the moment and most are at that level unless they have special needs.
The class sizes average 30 with one teacher and a teaching assistant, then you get parent helpers coming in and giving a couple of hours a week to sit down and do individual guided reading and of course the parents assisting at home has a massive influence.
