    Plane Spotting - The Quiz

I have a Friend who lives near the Airport ... if the conditions are just right, the planes fly quite close.

I can only really 'spot' the planes as they land because they have a common approach path.

So, here is a plane spotting quiz.

I'll show the image and you guess the ...
    • Airline
    • Make and Model
All the images are mine and I am a little limited as the wind direction has to be right for the planes to land on a certain flight path.

My friend lives near Swampy, so most/all my images come from there.

But this is also a wider Aviation thread ... don't limit yourself to just spotting, if you have any images, please feel free to post.

Plus, anyone working in the industry might have some tales to tell.

I'll kick it off with the following post.

    .
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

    Yep ... It's a Thai Airlines flight.

    It's also a 777

But, from the planes rego, it's not the 300 series.

Below is a higher def image from a slightly different angle which might help.

Hand that man a pie ...

    Officially it's a Boeing 777-2D7(ER)

    But I'd settle for a Boeing 777-200

    BTW ...

    ER = Extended Range

    What does the D7 indicate?

    It's an AirAsia X flight.

    Maybe an Airbus a320

Flying over either Honkers or Singapore?

Dilly, you have way too much coin, getting a seat that far forward.

Are you in the Cockpit ...

    Great Shot BTW

Well done, although Thai Air Asia only have that one model so your Air Asia X guess was wrong

    The island was Penang btw

Finnair airbus possibly the new a350-900, since it flies the Helsinki route but I can't tell the difference between an a330 and an a350 from the outside....

Being bored and in rivet counting mode.

It's a 330 as it has 4 widget things under the wing. An A350 only has 3.

Anyone who lives in or near Lat Krabang? There is a klong-side restaurant almost directly under the flight path.

Shared Pie to both Troy and VocalNeil.

A Finn Air indeed it is.

    And VN ... yep ... it's an AirBus A350-900

You mentioned the place @ Lat Krabang.

I'm south of that so need a Northerly wind so that the planes approach over the Gulf and take off over Lat Krabang

BTW ... you're bored. I wish I had the luxury. It takes a bit to put this together.

Then, it can all go up the shitter if the wind direction changes.

Plus, mornings work best as, in the afternoon, the sun is over or on the other side of the plane and being a bit hazy, the planes outline isn't in strong contrast and I miss heaps because the autofocus on the Camera simply can't pick up the planes image and focus in time.

I reckon I lose 1 in 2 Aircraft because of that. Finnair was a morning shot.

Then you have to data match.

    Crop and adjust the photo.

    Organise the folders.

    Etc Etc

Rain will clear the haze, but if it rains, that usually is a wind direction change and while the skies are a beautiful azure ... I lose all the planes.

But it's a bit of a lark for a few hours.

I think the inbound / outbound direction changes morning to afternoon. When I was at the restaurant on Sunday around 4pm they were landing and going overhead with wheels down. Maybe in the morning it is reversed. Also probably depends on which runway the aircraft are using?

I know nothing about commercial aircraft but note that the picture on the aircraft tracking website only has 3 widgets under the wing making it a 350 whereas the one in your picture has 4 making it a 330?

    It's only a quiz.

Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

There is a restaurant on King Kaew Road that you guys who are into planes and photography might interested in?

It is on the rooftop of someplace right next to the the airport (4th or 5th floor)

They have a dedicated raised observation deck that people use to take snaps of the planes.

    Here is a link...SKY Bar & Restaurant

Only been there once because the beer is well overpriced.

If anyone is around that way, send me a PM for a beer.

    Pic of the observation deck.

Landing and take off is decided by wind direction.

@ VN ... Mate, your eye for detail to be commended. Not many would have picked that up. In my rush to get as many planes as I could while the conditions were favourable, I missed that. Thanks

@ Bogan ... great find, never knew about that one.

RE:- Approach Paths and the determining factors

My understanding and observations are that it is wind direction based.
If the wind is coming from a Northerly direction, the planes landing @ Swampy approach from the South.

If, the wind conditions are neutral, a 'Westerly' or 'Easterly' breeze, as it is now, then the preference is, from my non-scientific observations, they approach from the North.

Watching the Flight Radar, it's fun to watch when someone pulls the trigger and says yep ... wind change ... everyone switch ... as demostrated in the image below.

The Thai Flight above was following the Eastern flight path, and made an early turn to the north (right), much earlier then the normal approach to Swampy from the north.

But, it appears that the wind direction changed and his flight path was altered (turn early right, then U-Turn South and then U-Turn North to approach Swampy from the South ... into a Northerly breeze.

Below is what a typical flight path might look like, when approaching along the Eastern flight corridor and then landing @ Swampy from the North.

It's obvious to say, but there are distinct flight corridors used and you can witness by the planes following the exact same flight path as my subject Plane.

Those planes at use the Southern Flight corridor, usually just 'drop' into Swampy in a straight line ... but this one below, had it's flight path / approach changed and I assume it was simply a wind direction change.

Sadly, there isn't much wind around at the moment, so the planes are approaching from the North.

BTW ... like Dillinger did, please feel free to make some personal contributions.
    • Maybe an interior cabin shot to guess the plane model ...
    • or a hostie shot to guess the Airline ...
    • or a lounge shot to guess the airport or,
    • if you are lucky enough to fly ... and aerial shot to guess the airport.
    • the aircraft shots don't have to be from Thailand either. I knew one guy, from another Forum, who worked way up north in freezing conditions and it was the Airport where the planes were taken to test their cold weather suitability ... cracking images.
    .
Many ways you guys can participate ... gets a bit boring with me just droning on!
