How was your 2016? Good, Bad or Indifferent? How would you rate it?

    .
2016 was a watershed year for us (the immediate Family).

After 6 years of playing country hopscotch we made the move to the West ... and it's been great.

The boys have developed their English language and are truly bilingual, an asset if they ever want to live in Thailand. They have developed their social skills, Kindy helped there.

My Thai Partner, has also integrated well, improved her English through formal study and has now a wide network of Thai friends, most of whose company I enjoy. Thankfully, no Queen Bees to be seen.

Sometimes you can take the girl out of Thailand ... but it still, from the stories I've read, the exception, rather then the rule.

Business, for me has been neutral, some profit ... but we didn't win Lotto.

I doubled the solar cells on the roof but keeping the same inverter (I'm not allowed to change) and haven't had an electricity bill recently ... they owe me a couple of hundred bucks.

On the negative, that 'Winter Coat' has stayed on through our Spring and now 10 kg more then when I left Thailand.
I've countered punched by joining the gym, my muscle mass and fitness has increased, but the coat is difficult to shed ... slowly David, slowly.

A positive of the gym is that there are some sweet ladies working out ...

Thankfully none of my rellies passed and my Aunts are still zipping around, one in her mid 90's!

    So ...
    • How was your 2016?
    • Good, Bad or Indifferent?
    • How would you rate it?
For us, rating 2016 a solid 7 ... could have been an 8, but we spent coin almost as much as we made.

A couple month stay is Thailand is just around the corner.

Absolutely terrific (daughter received her doctorate degree and passed the national board exam). Everyone is in good health and I’ve only one more (large) piece of in South Florida which should happen within the next few years.

There is no "good" nor "bad" in this world of causality.

I had success financially, tripling my salary. Sadness in my father's death.

I'll say 2016 was also a solid 7 bc I didn't improve my social intercourse skills.

The first half of 2016 was a bit shit; profits from my little hotel in Phuket rapidly decreasing (lack of Western guests, mainly tight-arsed mainland Chinese).

Then a friendly Thai drug-dealer forced me out of my own property (with the help of the local police). Had to flee for my life from his tooled-up drug buddies when he kindly told them that I had shopped them up all to the main police in Phuket (a lie of course, but Thai men aren't usually known for their intelligence).

Stepped back from that business and considered my options. Decided that getting out of the hotel business and Phuket was probably the most sensible thing I had done for many years.

Moved to Cambodia for a few months, got stoned on happy pizzas.

Decided to relocate back to Myanmar, where I used to teach in 2012/13. Got a good teaching and teacher-training job in Mandalay and working on getting my UK teaching licence.

Now I'm just about to relocate to the capital city of Naypyidaw with an 80% pay-rise and more business opportunities (not involving hotels or local women...)

I should get my teaching licence in mid-2017, which should ensure that I'm employable into my dotage.

So roll on 2017, I'm loving it so far

Happy New Year to all TD members from Myanmar.

The definition of my 2016 is: content.

    No complaints.

I'm still alive and family and friends are well.

I'm happy with my language progress also.

    A new adventure awaits soon.

That's a very good idea Simon, women seem to be your down side.

Besides that, you always come across as a very decent person.

Shite again, but a different shade and consistency from the previous year.
Significant changes beckon over the coming 12 months I reckon.

Why were you hopscotching? What bit of the west drew you back? What prompted you to leave?

    In a word ... KIDS

Had to born OS (in Thailand) see their progress here (photos).

Partner didn't have the appropriate Visa for the West back then.

Had to hopscotch because I'm too young to retire, like Thailand, love where I live in the West ... had the best of both worlds for a number of years.

I'm guessing you're North American, if you use the word "overseas"?
