WATCH OUT FOR ON THE NIGHT OF LOY KRATHONG NOV 14 — Mark November 14 in your calendar or in your smartphone so that you don’t miss once in a life-time experience when the Moon will be the closest to the Earth, the biggest and brightest in nearly 70 years.
The Moon will appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than an average full moon. This is the closest the Moon will get to Earth until November 25, 2034.
As explained by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), because the Moon has an elliptical orbit, one side called the perigee is about 48,280 km close to Earth than the other side called the apogee.
When the Earth-Moon-Sun system lines up with the perigee side of the Moon facing Earth and the Moon appears to be on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, we get what is called a perigee-syzgy that causes the Moon to appear much bigger and brighter than usual and it is referred to as a SuperMoon or, technically, a perigee Moon.
The Full Moon of November 14 is not only the closest Full Moon of 2016, but also the closest full moon to date in the 21st century, said NASA.
In Thailand, though, the SuperMoon phenomenon will coincide with the Loy Krathong day when Thais across the country celebrate by going out to natural waterways or pools to float krathongs.
They will have a rare chance to watch the Moon at its brightest and biggest.
