irl overdoses on espresso coffee Jasmine was taken to hospital (picture Northern Echo)

A teenager was taken to hospital after overdosing on espresso coffee.
Jasmine Willis, 17, developed a fever and began hyperventilating after drinking seven double espressos while working at her family's sandwich shop.
The student, of Stanley, County Durham, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, where doctors confirmed she had overdosed on caffeine.
She has since made a full recovery and is now warning others about the dangers of excessive coffee drinking.
Ms Willis, who had thought the coffees were single measures, said the effects were so severe that she began laughing and crying for no reason while serving customers at the shop.
I was having palpitations, my heart was beating so fast and I thought I was going into shock

She developed a fever and began struggling to breathe after being sent home by her father.
"My nerves were all over the place.
"I was drenched. I was burning up and hyperventilating.
"I was having palpitations, my heart was beating so fast and I thought I was going into shock.
"I did not realise this could happen to you and I only hope other people learn from my mistake."
The teenager, who was allowed home after a few hours of observation, suffered side effects for days afterwards and now says she cannot stand the sight of coffee.
Her father Gary, who runs The Sandwich Bar in Stanley, said: "She did not realise she was drinking double measures.
"I have always stressed to my children the importance of moderation but Jasmine got caught out on this occasion."

If you believe she was really on caffine, then you are as daft as her mother, who had been convinced her daughter wasn't on coke & speed the night before this happened.

Seven double expressos! A single expresso has 100mgs of caffeine. So 1400mgs would rattle anyone I think.

Sometimes if I need a serious jump start I'll down two double expressos. It's a pretty powerful hit IMHO.

Caffine just doesn't cut it, Mr E. Wake you up, maybe, but suffering side effects for days afterwards? You can't buy that at Starbucks.

IMHO, it sounds like a bit too much MDMA.

    Rubbish

Sounds more like good old fashioned speed. MDMA wears of pretty quickly, doesn't effect you for days, it's the other crap that goes with it that messes you up when you neck a bean.

However I have no idea of the metabolic rate of coffee in a person.

The docs should've run tests to investigate possible causes for such an overreaction.

Still, just as well it didn't happen in US otherwise we'd have the queue forming to sue the wholesaler, coffee growers, hospital...

Biker fails to notice missing leg

From correspondents in Tokyo | August 14, 2007

A JAPANESE biker failed to notice his leg had been severed below the knee when he hit a safety barrier, and rode on for 2km, leaving a friend to pick up the limb.
The 54-year-old office worker was out on his motorcycle with a group of friends in the city of Hamamatsu, west of Tokyo, yesterday, when he was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central barrier, the Mainichi Shimbun said.
He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next junction, the paper quoted local police as saying.
The man and his leg were taken to hospital, but the limb had been crushed in the collision, the paper said.

He was riding a bicycle? Doesn't that require two legs? Didn't he notice something missing when he started pedaling? Sounds fishy to me.

I guess I'm an addict, but my daily heartstarter is a good sized pot of filtered coffee, appropriately strong.
