The Thai trait of mock anger

I've been impressed with how Thai people deal with their children. Instead of getting angry, they often use mock anger : the mother will use an obviously artificial high tone in her voice, without injecting any real anger. The child then knows that it is out of line and that this is a warning.

The thing is that real nastiness and confrontation is avoided and everyone can often have a laugh about it all if the child (or adult) gets the message and backs off their behaviour.

My wife uses this with me sometimes and things work out fine. I think it's a sophisticated means of dealing with interpersonal problems, because it takes a straddle between real anger and just letting it all go without reacting.

What do other members think ? Any stories to tell about it ?

And how many other cultures use this ???

My (Thai) wife and I are now living in Australia. Unfortunately, mock anger here is rare. Usually people are either patient with their kids / partners, or slightly lose the plot.

I find that Thais adults reward bad behavior when out in public. Once a child starts to misbehave, say in a supermarket, they get bought a treat. It's the easy option. I've lost count of the times I've seen a child smacking grandma in a tantrum only to be rewarded with an ice-cream.

That happens everywhere among lower class people. Whether it's Westies in Auckland/Sydney, Eastenders in London, or trailer trash in the US.

I like it cos I can get genuinely angry and freaked, thus letting off steam, then smile and pretend it was all a joke.

I get angry and nobody loses face.

My nippers are 6 and 8 , it's no different from anywhere else really, the wife sets the ground rules and the kids follow, i like the way Asians bring the kids up to respect the elders, they certainly don't that in the west anymore, she takes takes no shit from the little bar stewards, me, on the other hand, they know I'm a soft touch.

I'm guessing it then progresses to "wrath", somewhere via "ire".

My kids know how to work their mother. Right from birth it's natural for kids to test the boundary to see how far they can go. If my kids want something then it's a question of time and manipulation before they get it.

Always shocks me back home how badly western brats carry on in public with the parents doing nothing about it, Thai kids are generally much better behaved, and so much cuter of course.
