Apps - how do they make their money?

Well, seeminly obvious answer would be "In-App advertising" or "Brand recognition" or some other bullshit marketing term.

When you download an app, most of them demand certain access to your phone. This includes access to your camera (take pictures), access to the microphone (record sound), access to all your files.

Now tell me, for an app that tells you the temperature in Tahiti - why the fuck would it need the above to function??

    Remember the old Thai/Chinese saying

"Mais mee free yu nais Lop" (and fuck right off you phoneticians - that's how it sounds)

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

And after that, you can go down the pub.

I have hotspot widget on my phone

it asks for no access and does exactly what it says on the tin

but it is about the only one and android itself always wants to talk to google

you could install replicant on a s2 and only use the f-driod repositories
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

While for myself it has been long given, about a year ago I left the house and cut into a multi-lane system. Looked both ways - as you do -

And some fucker in a truck had cut through the barriers and was flying at about 120kmph.

    Cheers brother

    Here is an interesting one.

    Why is GPS free?

I know the answer, but I think it would be cool if you do your own research.

Just off the top of my head obviously, - off to do some research now

Not even close my pedigree chum. GPS has been available to us all for a few decades now.

It's all to do with a Russian fighter jet shooting down a Korean civilian plane in the 70's (obviously killing all on-board).

The Yanks (who were the only country at the time to launch GPS satellites) gave up their GPS satellites to the world so the same mistake would not happen again.

Here's another GPS question that might tickle your knowledge nodes.

Why are ATM's fitted with a GPS, even though they are stationary and do not move?

Hint: It has nothing to do with robbers using a JCB to rip the machine out of the wall and the fuzz trying to track it.

The correct answer for the TD prattmasters:

GPS is free because its used by the 'human' lizard people to track the whole of humanity. it carried out using a sub dermal tracking device that is inserted in every baby under the pretext of it being a vitamin K job.... but don't tell anyone as it will get the anti vaco wacko's in a tizz.

Thats interesting, I had assumed that the intention was to make it freely available for commercial navigation as I understand the earlier land based radio location systems had been. If i rember the correctly, the error is the gps location was introduced by a jitter on the gps clock signal, the correction being transmitted with encryption. a jitter that did not affect the long term stability of the local gps clock. Sothing like this not the kind of thing you retro into a project like this... its the kind of design decision you make very early in the project.

As for ATM's didn't they used GPS, not entirely surprised. It will be used to provide an independent channel for keeping the ATM clock in sync with the servers they communicate with. it is likly to be used as part of their encryption keying and will be used to prevent replay attacks on comms.

another useless fact about GPS, the gps signal is less than 1000th the strength of the background noise. which is not too dissimulator to hearing someone whispering whilst a 747 revs up between the two of you.

Very nice and detailed there Hazz.

Correct. It is all to do with time. A GPS sends and receives 4 pieces of information, longitude, latitude, altitude and time.

What's so important about this time is that each satellite has an atomic clock, which is accurate to billionths of a second. Without this time stamp, financial institutions could be in ruins.

sodapper you suffer from downs syndrome... that explains your special needs.

    back to gps

the atomic clock are so accurate that are affected the relativistic effects caused by the satellites velocity and one of the sources of error that they have is the relativistic error introduced by the rocket launch. Last i heard they were trying to see if they could use quantum entanglement to resynchronise the clocks one they were in orbit.

I did see mushroom gps receivers on aso san in japan that would report their position to within 3mm, part of their program to monitor the volcano.
