Gold Medal - Tae Kwan Do

My daughter just phoned in from her ninth Tae Kwan Do tournament this year.

    She has eight silver medals.

Today she made it - GOLD!

Fighting an 18 year old a belt class senior to her and a weight class heavier.

Of little interest, I'm sure, but wanted to put it out there.

Way to go kicking ass and taking names. Great sport with discipline for youngsters. Are you celebrating with pizza tonight ? I will.

Yep. She's stoked. The girl she fought beat her badly about 6 months ago when they last clashed.

I may. She won't. Coach doesn't allow it. Or soda. Or junk food. Or candy.

    Well done Davis junior.

It's actually better for kids to not win every time and work their way up than just being unbelievably talented and winning every time. A mix of talent, attitude and hard work is an excellent grounding for a youngster.

(Has no place in this thread, but why is Nick trying to bang out a miniMe with Davis and Ant? )

My son just started boxing today. He doesn't do Tae Kwan Do, but is a Karate black belt.

It will be interesting to see what he thinks of his first day of boxing training.

He's more of a puncher than a kicker, so should all be good.

In the Phils that is hard to believe for one so young. Realistically that will be Great for her LT Health.

Good on the coach...and her for sticking to the regimine.

Almost forgot. In a shocking move, the school sent me $100 refund on her tuition Friday because she's a varsity athlete. Obviously, I spend far more than that on tournament fees, gear, etc, but it was a nice, very unexpected gesture.

^Thanks, mate. We had a long chat last night, as I tried to pump her up, but also get her prepared for the probability of a loss. They were competing against two schools with very aggressive programs, and, given her weight class, I was sure she'd be fighting up. We are both quite pleased. She was in the school paper last week with her eighth silver...reckon she'll be in it again.

    Now, back to academics.....

Well done Davis, I'm sure in a little while we'll also be hearing about your son being the next welterweight boxing champion.

^We'll see, mate. He's quite solid, and packs a wicked punch in Karate. For a kid who's really a very nice kid - moreso than his twin - he is very aggressive in a fight. I'll be quite interested to see how he goes with boxing. I was never a martial arts guy - wasn't around when I was a kid, but I was a pretty decent boxer...and a good wrestler.
We'll see how it goes...and if he likes it.

Btw, I still can't green you back. I'm too slow to reload. But have a virtual green anyway.

Tell her to sign up here.

Sounds like she'd be handy down in On-Nut.

    She just got home.

First testing was for form and style. She totally sucked. I asked why and she said "I keep mixing in Karate". (She's a karate black belt and after ten years, the Karate moves are ingrained.)

On the fight, turns out she won in sudden death overtime - by one point.....

    She said, "Girl's a beast!"
