    TD Heroes of old

Hat tip to Looper for posting a link toan old thread. I was reminded of a tricky old poster who often divided opinion on here and elsewhere.
Blackgang was an old school died in the wool racist. Widely travelled and a man of many skills and talents, he could always spin a good yarn.
Bis plain speaking and robust manner did not win him many friends, but anyone who new him well would tell you what a delightful character he was. His meat smokng exploits were legendary but he belonged to another bygone age. H would probably burnyou at the stake if you crossed him.
    Sadly no longer wth us.

    Yeah....Kevin was a TD legend.
I'm sure he's resting in corrigible circles.

We can still remember the good old days of TD with archival form, but never be revived or anything close to it.

The character and surroundings have changed significantly.
    It is what it is.

Kevin was an anachronism. A 19th century mind set in a 21st century world.

Visited him just weeks before he lost his long battle with emphysema. Poor bastard could hardly walk from his bedroom/TD launch pad to the kitchen where he loved to cook. Being about the same age and of simular backgounds we spent hours reminiscing about the good ole days. Lot's of sea stories, fishing adventures, abalone diving of the California coast, building stuff, cars, and of course pussy.

He asked me for a smoke as I was leaving. At first I thought no way then said fuck it and we had a smoke together in his driveway before I left for home. Last I saw of Kevin. He left us a few weeks later.

    RIP you crusty old codger..

If one goes back and reads some of the very old threads the vibe on here was so much different.

I put that down to the forum being relatively new, a much more varied bunch of members and a progressive owner.

    Just the way it was.

The forum died when the old mods were sacked and new mods installed who had fuk all idea what the forum was about or how it was run.

One can only imagine what that was all about. It was like the new owner was trying his hardest to derail and destroy it.

It's taken a long time to get this forum somewhat back on track.

That's nice, I'd have done the same.

I had lots of run-ins with old BG when I was a newbie here but one day I realised it was getting to me and about the same time I learned just how ill he was and there was some mention of him traveling down south IIRC

I thought 'fukittt' and fired him off a PM saying that while I still thought he was a reprehensible old bigot and we'd almost certainly never agree about anything that if he found himself in Phuket he should give me a shout as it'd be a blast to have a glass of lemonade with him.

Knock me down if the old bugger didn't send me a lovely PM right back saying that if my Mrs and I ever got up to his neck of the woods I was to be sure to look him up at home and he'd have some some BBQ ready no matter what time of day or night.

The broadsides that he'd fire off at me, Panama Hat and others were almost poetry. The wannabees nowadays unload the best they've got from time to time but they aren't worth snot compared to a full-on BG bombardment!

Oh for fucks sake! Is this what TD has come to? Old men wallowing in sentimentality and distorted memories? Kevin had some interesting experiences and I liked him because he rarely gave a fuck but he was also a vile, selfish, neanderthal old [at][at][at][at], as some of you hypocrites had no hesitation pointing out at the time.

He was, as long as you avoided talking about almost everything. And, to be honest, few people are as vile in real life as they are on the net. But that still doesnt justify the bullshit on this thread.

He knew exactly what I thought about his views, mainly because I told him. Would that make me a hypocrite?

Bob has only said what many, myself included have beeen thinking. As one believes in not speaking ill of the dead, i will only say that his personna on the board was of a despicable vile old racist.

Hero? Hero of TD? Never. "Character" maybe.

I remember one of my last run ins with BG, he had learnt that I was to have neck surgery and wished me well in his inimitable style by hoping that it left me a paraplegic.

It sticks in my mind and I found it quite amusing at the time as he'd made a complete hash out of trying to spell "paraplegic". 'Parapaleegic' or something like that.

He always came across as little boy lost keyboard warrior big mouth. He made up stories of how tough he was and threatened to shoot posters that saw through his little bravado show. He had an ever-expanding ignore list that never worked and had derogatory views on anyone not a white, Merican, gun-loving, redneck.

On the plus side he did communicate some interesting experiences tackling his alcoholism and was especially good at smoking meat.

His biggest contribution is showing us how far we've come in a couple of generations regarding bigot-ism, racism and general intolerance.
Some people think it don't, but it be.
