They are spending a fortune on some of these installations while the poor old flippers are staking their claim by taking up residence on rotting old run aground freighters.

The Chinese aren't fucking around out there and I can't see anyone stepping up to stop them.

I believe the Chinese are more concerned about their more immediate sphere of influence closer to home. Despite their rapidly expanding Navy their carrier and submarine fleets have virtually zero combat experience. For the last 2 years the US Pacific fleet has been reorganising, with increased support and joint exercises for South Korea, Japan and the Philippines. They have asked NATO allies to take on a larger share of commitments in the Atlantic and ME.
If I was looking at this from a tactical point of view, I would be offering all kinds of incentives to Phils, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Japan to establish civilian communities with decent infrastructure on the Islands of interest.
The Chinese may have few qualms about attacking Asian naval vessels or air bases, but may draw the line with civilians. They are not yet a match for the US Navy and the more likely conflict will be similar to the cold war in Europe.
