A Foul Wind Bloweth In Yon Theatre

Did an overnighter to Bkk on Sunday and decided to take in a movie at the MBK mall. I ended up choosing "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" and settled into a nice seat. The theatre was mostly empty and there were perhaps 25 patrons in total scattered mainly around the center section where I sat.

Around the time of the requisite standing period, I began to notice the unmistakable odeur of durian wafting through the theatre. I looked around to try to determine who the offending scoundrel might be that had smuggled the despicable stuff. No visible confirmation was forthcoming. Another person nearby also reacted by sniffing at the air in an inquisitive and slightly annoyed manner.

My first thoughts were what kind of cretin would do such a thing? Could it be a prankster trying to get their jollies knowing that some in the audience might be revolted by the putrid aroma? Or was it simply some person with such little brain power that they thought it was quite alright to bring their snack into the premises?

I became engrossed in the film as it progressed, but the durian smell lingered. I considered stepping outside to notify one of the theater attendants, thinking it might lead to one of two possible outcomes; the attendant would smile and do absolutely nothing about it, or it might result in a full on Thai style SWAT assault to find the offender and bring them to justice.

Not wanting to interrupt the flow of the movie, I chose not to make a bigger stink about the situation than the durian itself. I soldiered on and enjoyed the film. The theatre being fairly large in area with a high ceiling and strong air conditioning system probably helped to dissipate the smell. I think if it were a smaller venue where the resulting fumes could have been more concentrated, I would have been inclined to seek intervention during the film.

What would you have done in these circumstances?

I would have called Fluke, the Temple Ranger, and asked if he had his Theatre Ticket...

Or Rick "Danger" Thai...But that would have resulted in serious carnage...

    -Santa Claus...

Can't really do a comparo. Even though I downloaded the original a few years ago and still have it tucked away in my archives, I don't think I've seen it all the way through.

I did find this newer release to be quite entertaining and definitely give it a thumbs up. I would say it's a good 7 or 8 on the IMDB 10 point scale. Looked real good on the big screen - better than trying to view on my computer monitor.

As far as what to do in the theatre when confronted by durian smugglers, in hind sight, I should have whipped out me big boi (on me mobile that is) and played this at full volume. Think that would have spurred the theatre attendants into some kind of action, hopefully directed towards the durian perps and not me.

No Thai would have a) done such a fucking stupid thing or b) watched that film. So, it must have been a tourist. I doubt any farang would bring it in either. Thus, it must have been a Malaysian/Singaporean since they are the only folk who eat that shite and watch English movies. Kitchen sinks do eat durian but they wouldn't be in that theatre watching the movie without sink subtitles which I doubt were showing.
I would have enquired accordingly and upon locating the offending person I would have invited him to either leave or die.

Yep, been there a few times and it can be ridiculously cold. Does make for a good excuse for a snuggle though, otherwise both might resemble a popsickle before the opening credits even roll. This particular theatre wasn't too bad for a change, but cold enough to keep the durian smell from getting overpowering.

The other day the wife left a wrapped package of husked durian in the pick-up when it was parked while we went shopping. I did not notice it before hand with the air conditioning on. But when we came back after only a short while in the sun, phew!!! The durian was relegated very quickly to the bed of the pick-up for the ride home.
