    Australia Day

    Wikipedia. Australia Day.

First fifty years: 1788 to 1838.

Although there was no official recognition of the colony's anniversary,
with New South Wales Almanacks of 1806 and 1808 placing no special
significance on 26 January, by 1808 the date was being used by the
colony's immigrants, especially the emancipated convicts, to "celebrate
their love of the land they lived in" with "drinking and merriment"

The 1808 celebrations followed this pattern, beginning at sundown on
the 25 January, and lasted into the night.

Reminds me of that old fable, Brer Rabbit

Happy Australia Day on Sunday 26th, my fellow convicts .

'Invasion Day' graffiti at Botany Bay
    Friday January 24, 2014

Graffiti denouncing Australia Day as 'Invasion Day' has been daubed along the foreshore at Sydney's Botany Bay, angering locals.

Anti Australia Day slogans were painted on retaining walls, toilet blocks and other structures along an 8km foreshore stretch overnight, prompting a council clean-up on Friday.

Botany Bay is where Captain Cook first landed in Australia.

Rockdale mayor Shane O'Brien said he was angry and disappointed on behalf of the local community.

'We're a very proud multicultural community and we make a point of acknowledging our indigenous history whenever we can and also promoting indigenous culture,' he told Fairfax Radio Network.

'So I don't think our community deserved this sort of attack and the cost associated with cleaning it up.'

Mr O'Brien said he was also disappointed because he was a big supporter of reconciliation.

'When something like this happens anyone who's unsure or not really there yet is more inclined to swing the other way.'

'I wonder what goes through the heads of these people when they actually set back their own cause.'

Police are viewing CCTV footage in a bid to catch the culprits.

The Botany Bay attack follows a similar anti-Australia Day graffiti attack on the historic Cooks' Cottage in Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens early on Friday.

Vandals sprayed paint on the cottage and smashed a window.

The cottage was built in 1755 in Yorkshire by Captain James Cook's parents and bought by philanthropist Sir Russell Grimwade in 1933 to be dismantled and shipped to Melbourne.skynews.com.au

Captain Cook's cottage defaced by vandals in anti-Australia Day protest

    • Activists smash window, spray anti-Australia Day slogans on historic site
    • Police suspect vandals knew how to bypass the CCTV system
    • It's the third such attack at the popular Melbourne attraction
    • Anarchist blog labels cottage 'an absurd shrine to genocide'

One of Melbourne’s top historic attractions, Captain Cook’s cottage, has been vandalised by graffiti activists in an anti-Australia Day protest.
The vandals used spray paint to write profanities and slogans, including ‘26th Jan Australia’s shame’. They also smashed a window and spray-painted the historic building in gaudy fluorescent colours.
The staff at the cottage, which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, were quick to cover up the graffiti on one wall by erecting over it a large painting of the Endeavour, the ship that brought Captain James Cook to Australia.

The slogans denouncing the arrival of the pioneering British ships in 1788 and what is now an annual celebration of the event were painted overnight on the walls of the historic cottage.

Captain Cook: The building was originally his parents' house and was transported to Australia brick-by-brick

It is the third such attack on the building in the past year. Last February it was vandalised twice in similar anti-Australia Day protests. One slogan at the time declared: 'Cappy Cook was a crook killer liar thief.'
An anarchist blog, Disaccords, claimed responsibility for the attacks in 2013, saying the building was ‘an absurd shrine to genocide’ and that ‘the colonial system that oppresses us all’ must be destroyed.
Today the blog posted media coverage of the latest attack, but did not provide its own comment.
No one was charged over the attacks in 2013, according to ABC News.
The cottage is the oldest building in Australia, according to the City of Melbourne website. It was originally built in 1755 in Yorkshire, England, by Captain Cook's parents, but in 1933 a wealthy philanthropist, Russell Grimwade, bought it as a centenary gift for the city.
The building was taken apart brick by brick and packed into 253 cases and 40 barrels to be shipped to Australia, along with cuttings of ivy that originally adorned the house. It was reassembled in the heritage-listed Fitzroy Gardens, and was opened to the public in October 1934.
The ivy cuttings were replanted when the cottage was rebuilt and now cover large parts of the property. An English cottage garden has also been laid out, while inside are furnishings that reflect the styles of the 1700s.

I'll only say one thing about the vandals.

I bet they have their hands out next week,
for the dole money that payed for the spray paint.

I have mixed feelings about Australia day. I wonder if there's a better day to celebrate the birth of the nation? Fact is 26th of Jan represents the birth of NSW, not Australia.

Come on everyone, we had to ship out our villains and your ancestors were so numerical these small islands of the UK had no alternative but to 'export' them.
Looking back on it i reckon you lot got the best of it with a nice country whereas we are inundated with all sorts of undesirables needing meal tickets from such stalwart friendly nations as ....err Kosovo, Albania..etc.
My dad was one of 8 and the other 7 all went out on the Ł10 passage in the 50's and i think i am just envious.

If it was good enough for my forebears ( who would have shed, blood
sweat & tears ) to celebrate Oz day on the 26th of Jan, then it's good
enough for me, I'll be having a cold one on Sunday, & fvck the apologist.

26th jan was the birth of a colony in NSW. The commonwealth of Australia did not come into being until 1st Jan 1901..... but 1st of jan is an awkward day to celebrate it...

I highly doubt that - our education system hardly espouses that view, nor does our media.

Why does the near obliteration of a whole society come down to welfare handouts to you?

Fact is that most of the Aboriginal population was destroyed and for us to celebrate Australia Day on a particular day set by the invaders is nothing but pathetic.

Massacres well into the 20th century
    Universal Voting rights in 1962
    Stolen children - forced Westernisation
    Land grabs

. . . and the list goes on.

Her are a few poignant snaps:

. . . and these no-good bludgers actually feel wronged and think they deserve some sort of restitution???

I would bet that you may be one of the Thai expats who complains about not having rights; voting, land ownership etc...

    Let's cap it off with

Apologist for what, exactly? . . . and who said anything about YOU killing an aboriginal.

This is precisely the kind of dialogue that sublimely misses the point - actually, that circumvents the point.

No-one's blaming YOU for it - why do you think anyone does?

Seriously, what am I supposed to be an apologist for? Wouldn't condoning and nullifying near-genocide be more of an apologist stance?

I look forward to an interesting discussion
