    Burgers, What's Your Style?

Growing up when and where I did you eat a lot of hamburgers. To me that is a beef patty on a bun. But here a burger can be chicken, pork, fish, hell I have even seen shrimp.

I prefer a good old hamburger made from a nice beef patty of ground round or sirloin. There is no need for a giant burger a quarter to a maximum of a third of a pound is desired. I like just one not many stacked on one another.

Then a nice fresh bun, poppy seeds are nice. Mayo, on the bun. Then add a couple of strips of smoked bacon, some Jack or Cheddar cheese, additionally onions, varied from grilled to raw red ones, iceberg lettuce, and a nice slice of a beefsteak tomato.

But I know there are so many variations country by country, I know eggs, beetroot, pineapple, salsa, but what else.

Served with some nice wedge cut fried potatoes.

About that size broiled or barbecued would be best.

    Wedge cut fries,

    Now the the veggies.

Sometimes onion rings really hit the spot.

I always make my own - beef mince with a little finely chopped onion, smoked paprika, chilli powder, salt and pepper. Roughly 200gram each.

I put some on the BBQ a couple of days ago and they tasted great!

I have started to do that as well. The kids love it. Great idea mate.

Oh feel free to post up any photos, I ripped all those you see off the net. I have a few of mine, but they dont convey the sense of hunger as well.

For me, you can forget the veggies. Onions yes, but tomato and lettuce are just a waste of time. The tomato gets slightly warmed by the pattie making it bloody horrible and the lettuce just provides a little green slide for the pattie to escape down when you bite into the burger.

I ran into Rawlins last night as he was scoffing down a big plate of Chilli-con-carne and rice.

I in turn ordered 6 huge monster burgers to satisfy the mob at home and they are fvcking delicious. Simple burgers but a huge chuck of mince beef on monster rolls, fresh tomato and lettuce, cheese on 3 and heaps of fried onions. The cook offers sachets of different sauces but to be honest why spoil something so good by pouring chemicals on it.

The Route 66 bar on Soi Siam Country Club Rd in Pattaya serve up some of the best pub grub in Thailand as Rawlins and my mob at home will testify.

Loy Toy thinks so as well but no beetroot slices which is a disappointment.

If it's a good patty and bun, I just like a plain burger. Lettuce, tomato, raw onion, sauce and a pickle.
Not much into cheese on burgers, no real point to it that I can see. But if there are pickled jalapeno's available, then I'll have cheese with it.
Alternatively, when I'm in the mood, there's the Sloppy. Burger with fried onion, bacon & egg, BBQ sauce, maybe a bit of lettuce & tomato. Add beetroot, and you've got your basic aussie style.

As much as I like beetroot, I can't see it working in a burger. It should be eaten alone with a drizzle of oil and vinegar so as not to taint the rest of the food a red tinge. I'm not being racist or anything but beetroot have their place and should stay the fuck away from other food.

I just think it ruins the appearance of a salad. Beetrot should be dished up in a side bowl. I'm gonna have some for lunch, actually. In side bowl. Segregated from the rest of the fodder.

My plate is very similar to 1950s America.

Beetroot works well with the aussie sloppy style- better than pickle.

With all that BBQ sauce anyway, you hardly notice the beetroot taint until later, when it's all down your shirt along with some bbq sauce and pieces of egg & onion. That shows you enjoyed your scoff, and you wear it as a badge of pride in the next pub.

Properly.....I believe the patty would be of a lamb-beef mix. Seasoned accordingly.

Savory Focccia serving as a bun. Real mayo - lightly.
Sauteed spinach and thinly sliced tomato only, to fill it out.

    ....and certainly absent of beetroot.
[wtf is wrong with you people?]

When I do home made burgers I often melt blue cheese on top. I don't normally like blue cheese but it works really well on burgers IMO.

As for the meat I'll use anything but lamb is probably my favourite.

They've even got a button on the filter which morphs them into menthol. Classy smokes. Although I'm looking forward to my first 10bahts worth of SMS's.

The problem with every burger I've ever had is that no one except me and some bald English chef gets the texture right.

Could not agree more, it's a regular port of call for lunch on the way home when golfing out that way and besides having lots of good stuff to choose from, their burgers are superb. One place on the Bright Side that does a similar burger is Oz burger (cnr Soi Diana and Soi Buakow) if you're ever in that area.

As for the Beetroot part, I couldn't imagine having plain boiled beets on a burger but the tinned/bottled stuff that's been pickled is the biz. I guess it's just a matter of what you grew up eating, after all there's people out there who eat unimaginably horrendous shit like black pudding, liver, or jellied eels .

Thats the beauty of burgers, meat, bread and what ever you like. Hell the cut of meat and type of bun is even up to you... Cheers.

If you go to the Southwest of the USA you will run across green chilli salsa it is every where. But the burger is yet another adaptation.
