Living near to, and spending quite a bit of time in, San Francisco. One is left to wonder how you found that site. Although gays are ubiquitous no matter where you go in The City, the freak-show & fetish group are something you have to look for.Originally Posted by david44

If he doesn;t sound like your cup 'o tea, perhaps I can post an ad for you, There's a nice little leather bar on my way to work. I did time with the manager about 40 years ago. He's a little more freaky, but with 20 years at Folsom he's learned more about how to make man on man sex even more freaky than most queens have forgotten. I am sure he would be happy to show you the "ropes" (as it were).
For those of you with more ordinary tastes; You may find beginning the evening with a plate of food and few beers at Lefty O' Doul's then a short walk one block south and a couple blocks west, you can watch a nice hetro sex show, meet a delightful SF lass on the street (check for a badge) and even find accommodation available short time.
Or perhaps something even less adventurous? a decent meal, a (no sex) show? world class entertainment? Hip-hop? Jazz? Blues? Salsa? California & Fillmore is a good place to stop. John Lee Hookers Boom boom Room is still going strong, I hear. how about a bit more spice? Head to the Mission. Know some great Puerto Rican joints, black beans and Rum. 'Ricans and Cubans are some of the sexiest women on the planet. Plenty of Mexican, too. More of a metro kind guy? SOMA, for them trendy types, if you like. Have some dungeness crab and a clam chowder sourdough bowl if you just gotta do something touristy, plenty of mid-western babes at Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39. If you're in SF and you're a single guy interested in women, you gotta pretty loathsome to not get laid; by an interesting and attractive woman. All these things are easy to find. But the freak-show fetish crowd? Small community, few real participants. Not impossible to find. You gotta wanna take the time to look for it though.
Whatever your tastes, I'm sure you can find something tasty to eat at the Indian restaurant occupying the building where Ginsberg first recited the pivotal poem; "Howl." Arguably one of the most important literary works of the 20th Century, if not all human history. How many kids heard/read it then went on to go out and try to change the world? The Beats gave birth to the hippie, and so on.
I love San Francisco. It's a great little town. Less than one million souls populate it's borders. San Jose has surpassed it in size, lacks any soul to speak of. Oakland was catching up but they seem to kill each other off faster than they can grow. Still got some mighty fine weed, though. Did you know that SF was the birthplace of the United Nations? So; not everything to come out of SF is all that great.
If you're going to San Francisco, you will find what you want to find. Just look for it. Seems Wavy Davy found what he was lookin' for, eh?
ME? Goin' up the bay a bit for the races tomorrow: FIA World Touring Car Championship | Tickets | Sonoma Raceway

Good post, Frankie.
Got a cousin (straight) who lives in the city and SF is just fine with him and his family.
San Fran is over rated.
Just a bunch of prissy tourists cruising around on rented Segways. Too much structure, too expensive. All the smut is regulated and lamed out. Unlike Pattaya
Its also kinda cold too.
San Francisco, good times, miss the place
it's a magic city, probably changed too much now
Agreed ,Lefty O'Doul's and North Beach for me,used to live at top of Montgomery near the Basque Notel (Romulo St,Beat Museum late night snax, strip joints Italian restaurants and fresh air) and stroll up through the gardnes to the Coit Tower of Zodiac fame.
Th UN we'll agree to differ for all its faults it has helped more refugees and employed more Irish than most others.
A quick look at festivals SF revealed what I thought might amuse a traveller en route Fukuoka and reflects the liberal views for which the fine city is famous/notorious.
May I add the African Orthodox Church of St John Will-I-Am Coltrane
1286 Fillmore Street CA 94115 a good 2 mile hike west of Union Sq head up over Van ness and down to little japan.

The music and Art are sufficient reason to go for a blow
The Muni and BART rapid trasit plus the iconic cable cars make this hilly city easy to explore or hire a bike and head out across the bridge or grab a ferry from the Embarcadero food halls to Sausalito or nip on the BART trains to Dublin .
As someone who generally hate cities apart from Sam Sebastain this has to be my favourite for despite the awful weather ,tramps everywhere it has a uniquely varied pedestrian culture unique in USA in my limited experience.
Enjoy
Changed big time Butters. Overrun with silicone valley millionaires. The entire lot a bunch of "look at me" posers.Originally Posted by Butterfly

Fortunately Thailand is so removed from the cutting edge of fashion all copycat and Hello Kitty that the cafe society of spit and sawdust here is probably similar to 1013
Few cities of such size have had such an influence on popular culture, perhaps liverpool Berlin, hard to think of any Asian city of a million unless one calls Medina's thrall influence.
In all of history maybe Athens,Dessau,Florence,Sparta,Kyoto in the Showa period and Cuzco in the new world.

Recently took a walk around The City. Started in the financial district, took walk up the hill into North Beach, through NB down the other side to Fisherman's Wharf, back up Columbus caught the Mason St. Cable car, got off at Powell and Market, dude refused any money for the ride, we jumped on the #5 headed west up Fulton into the teens, jumped off somewhere couple blocks east of Stanyan, walked south to the panhandle. Took my Ol' Lady to the Haight for a looksee. She was gettin' kinda cold so we ducked into a Hippie-dippie lookin' Indian Joint Run by some chick from Burriram (coincidence, honest honey) Bought a 54.95 Jacket for 29.95 and walked down Haight back towards Market. Stopped at a smoke shop/"dispensary" bought a couple grams of some High-Power Sativa. took a little trip down Mission, some kinda Geek Show at Moscone Center kept on until New Montgomery (house of Shields, good drinks and a great steak) and turned left back up to Market. Walked down market to Sansom St. Caught BART home. Nice day, not a single pretentious Silicone Valley Millionaire to be seen; well, maybe a few there around that Geek show. Thing is, I think you gotta be either a millionaire or homeless to live in the city these days; fuckin' expensive place to have an address.
All your Silicone Valley fucks are actually livin down there. Fuckin' Commute to that area is the shits, the culture there is very much as you describe (overrun, etc.), I'll be damned if I'll live down there. I've turned down at least 20 Jobs in that area.
I love The City, know most back streets and dives. Some joints got lines out the door now where before I left they had elbow room at lunch time. Get drunk miss the last train home, hangout in an all night diner nursin' a coffee and flirtin' with the waitress.
After all the years away, I still miss San Francisco.
My brother was there a couple of days ago and told me the new Bay Bridge had just opened. This replaces the span damaged in the Loma Prieta Earthquake.

Tom Wolfe writes well. As with much of his work he is always on the outside looking in, usually missing the point of what it is he is writing about. Hunter Thompson had a similar problem, although more of a participant, he did drugs but he didn't play with the band, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Huncke, Rexroth, etc. WERE the band.
My (ex) sister-in-law put Thompson up when he was researching the book "Hells Angels", and put Kerouac up when ever he was in need of a place to crash on the east side of the bay. She spent time At La Honda, knew all the players in all the books personally and knew most quite well. Her one sentence review of the three writers: "Hunter was a punk asshole; Tom just a reporter, I didn't like him but he stayed out of the way, Jack was alright."
She was the ol' lady of one of the guys in Oakland at the time. After the divorce she hooked up with a Nomadic kinda fella, continued to live the life. I got to meet quite a few of the players, later on. Everyone that talked with me about those days had pretty much the same opinion; Wolfe and Thompson were one of "them." Kerouac was one of "us."
I came into that life in '65 or so. I was just a young pipsqueak of 14, guy in my geography class, would argue with the teacher about Vietnam, get thrown out of class. Talked me into going to the "Vietnam Day Parade." Had some pretty good weed too. About eight - ten years later., the in-laws came to live with me for a couple years, in between gigs. Interesting times, man. wasn't until about 15 -20 more years until I realized what I actually was in the middle of. I shoulda took notes. Kinda feel like Forest Gump.
Ginsberg lived on his own plane. His poem, "Howl" was the catalyst for thousands of young students, musicians, artists, poets, intellectuals and discontented citizens that brought together a movement, you know, all that shit of the sixties and on. Comparing the importance of "lectric Koolaid Acid Test" with the importance of "Howl?" One was the reportage of people doing, the other; the inspiration that started all that doing.
Aw shit. I was just gonna post a pic of the races and be done with it. San Francisco, the Beats and later hippies were very important and influential parts of my life. Good thing I ain't been drinkin'. The weather was perfect, the races tight and riveting. I got me a '95 325is with Factory M# suspension, might go rip the carpet and seats out of it tonight. Looked like too much fun.
I love livin' in the San Francisco Bay.
