The Declaration of Independence says I have the right to "Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness". Why should any government tell me who I can and cannot adopt? I make plenty of money, have a spotless criminal record and can provide more than enough for this child!
    American arrogance at its best.

    ^^^

    non-American arrogance at its worst!

I am not sure who pissed in your cornflakes brah.....

If my "pursuit of happiness" is adopting my niece I don't think the US government should tell me no.

If that if that ageing goodcause hitchhiker madonna and that other tree hugging actress can do it, then im sure you will, although i think that adoption amounts to more than a promise to buy a car for a sixteenth birthday present.

There are many that think a luxury free life in rural thailand with a basic education can be just as fullfilling as being brought up in the usa or other wextern countries with their competitiveness, shallowness, constant stress etc etc etc.

fair enough my friend... I know that her possibilities are limited where she is now. Hawaii will give her possibilities she does not even know exist. She is so "book smart" and she struggles with the boredom of the teaching level in rural Thailand. I will send her to the same private school Obama graduated from.

our next step is looking into the student visa process.

yes we have put it to her... She wants to live here in Hawaii with us. She is no fool... She is the top of her class at school and feels she is not challenged. She wants to have a the best education she can get.

and she knows she would come home every summer to see everybody.

and the last adjective I would ever use to describe myself.. or my wife... is selfish!
I really dont think that nine year olds from that part of the World can make a logical choice about what She wants and what is best for her.
Kids of her age know little about the outside World , let lone the difference in life She will face , maybe you sold her the dream, "Come and live with me and you will have everything you wish for" , most kids would say yes to that .
If you solely wanted what was best for her, you should send her Parents money over and maybe then they would get back together and She can then be bought up in her home Country by Her Parents .
Emigrating is hard enough for Adults, let alone a Child leaving her Parents , Country and everything She knows and having to adapt to US life
