No capital letters when appropriate, no apostrophes when needed, incorrect spelling and incorrect use of verb with singular word "everyone". How much do you pay your English teacher ? Take my advice and get a new one.

Well if you have shortcomings with the language you wouldn't want them around. Same reason a psychologist couldn't be a hit at a cocktail party.

And contrary to popular belief not everyone could be a teacher. Not everyone likes kids, not everyone knows enough about their language to teach at higher levels, not everyone wants to be on stage.

It's an honourable profession but it pays squat. If income dominates your life you'd naturally see teaching as a grunt's profession.

People in the arts, like musicians, gain a lot of respect (if they're good) in the First World nations. Girls, for example, will be very attracted to an artist if he's good, even if he shows signs of being good at some point in the future. The woman can provide a matrix for him, as did sponsors for promising artists in the old days.

Not in Asia, at least the Asia I know. An ugly, boring, effeminate guy whose parents own a thriving toothpick factory in BKK could have his pick over any unknown musician in the city, any English teacher, cause they know what he earns and it isn't enough.

Why is that an issue, if it doesn't affect their work ? A businessman can visit Soi Cowboy, why not a teacher?

Language is about communication, did you understand my meaning ? Yes, so I communicated that thought well then, aye ?

Besides, posting on a forum is different to teaching language, innit?

Yes, I was somewhat harsh. You are doing very well considering English is not your first language.

It seems to attract a lot of pooves, ne'er-do-wells, nancyboys, fiddlers and general rapscallions who use it as a crutch to support their disreputable ways...
Not all by any means, perhaps not even a sizable percentage, but enough to give the occupation a bad reputation.

If there doing such a good job why don't many thais speak da engrish.

I overheard one tefler telling someone in a bar that his job was just "crowd control"

Surely the best way to teach English is if you could translate it from Thai, instead of just getting them to copy from a black board ?

I thought that you were a certified teacher in an international atmosphere; with the appropriate years of university behind you.

Not sure why 'pooves' count as disreputable but I guess there's some truth in the general observation. On the other hand, TEFLers aren't any more prone to bad behaviour than any of the non-teaching pensioners, retirees, fuckwits, businessmen, fruitloops, idiots, mental cases, dreamers, etc. who wash up on Thai shores. Part of the reason for bad feeling toward TEFLers, I'm sure, is a feeling that they have engaged in a kind of social queue-jumping - the semi-literate oaf who gets a job teaching kids in Shitsticksnowhere is rewarded with a social position in Thailand that others (perhaps rightly) resent.

^ there is among many no doubt an element of jealousy in some who consider working for a pittance (I'm excluding professional teachers here) here preferable to working for a pittance in their home countries but are too scared or illiterate to take the plunge.
And to those who made the move without taking a slave wage job, some teflers exude an air of self rightious smugness that just make you want to smack them in the head witha 4x2.

My last year in teaching in Colorado I made just over $52,000 per year. This year in Thailand I made $40,000 for the school year.

    Do the Math.

My argument remains. If one is a qualified teacher then one does ok (It ain't bad).

If a teacher was at ISB (the most expensive school in Bangkok) then the salary increases by 25%. I am to old.

But what the hell do I know?

ISB would much rather hire young teachers with a Masters instead of old fuks like me.

I wish that I knew this 15 years ago.
