This is Slingshot, the aptly named water purification device that is now taking on a Goliath of a challenge, the worlds clean water supply.

Slingshot was created by Dean Kamen who’s best known for inventing the Segway PT. The idea was inspired by the World Heath Organization (WHO) statistics that portray a rather shocking story of 900 million people across the globe without a readily available supply of drinking water and around 3.5 million people many children under 5 dying annually with diseases related to unclean water.

The world’s surface is about two-thirds water yet only about 1% is fresh potable water with the large percentage making up saline oceans and ice. Slingshots objective is to tap into this vast resource creating drinkable water that is readily available and inexpensive to produce.
    ...
The device works by taking in “anything that looks wet” this can include raw sewage, ocean water and polluted rivers it then runs this through a vapor compression distiller that produces up to 950 litres of clean water daily (enough for 100 people). The power required for the slingshot is around the equivalent of a hairdryer and can be fueled by cow dung.

Recently Kamen and his team of engineers at his research and development DEKA corp have entered deals with Coca-Cola to begin mass production and distribution of the slingshot devices across Africa and Latin America after a successful trail period at 5 schools in Ghana. Coca-Cola is committing millions to the development, production and deployment of the Slingshot machines in what it calls a long-term global clean water partnership. Kamen is now convinced all the pieces are in place to bring his decade-long dream to reality.

Currently 20 units of slingshot are undergoing rigorous testing, while 30 are being field tested by Coke in South Africa, Mexico and Paraguay. If Coke is happy with the lab and field tests slingshot will go into mass production in mid 2013.
