Elderly couple accidentally grew the biggest cannabis plant police had ever seen

An elderly couple have accidentally grown a huge cannabis plant, described by police as the largest they have ever seen.

The pensioners, from Bedford, innocently bought a cutting from a car boot sale believing it to be an innocuous shrub.

They planted the cutting in their garden, carefully tending to it until it became a huge bush. The couple were said to have been oblivious to the fact the plant was illegal.

Police officers were said to be astounded when they spotted the plant. They have since collected it and plan to dispose of it, but not before they shared their discovery on Twitter.

Alongside a picture of the bush, Bedford Police tweeted: “Seized today. Elderly couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended carefully - biggest cannabis plant we had seen.“

A spokesman for the force told the BBC that no action would be taken against the couple.

Ridiculous, in a world supposedly concerned about deforestation & global warming, that the many uses of the humble hemp plant are not more widely known and utilised. It grows around six times as fast as the most vigorous trees, is fibrous- and thus a logical raw material for paper, as opposed to the current energy inefficient and polluting practise of wasting untold hectares of slow growing trees for this purpose, and then wasting the energy to wood chip them. It makes better paper too, and we sure need plenty of that just to keep up with our various governments pathetic attempts to actually address deforestation .

'Tis a pity the owners of a country- it's citizens- do not take a greater collective interest in the many idiotic ways national governments piss their money against a wall. Whatever ones view of the 'war on drugs' extending this to a war on hemp is simply ludicrous. Yet, in the US at least, more people are in jail for possessing weed than any other 'offence'.

As far as the OP goes, yeh smells fishy to me too marmite. The yeomanry of Bedfordshire are quite au fait with what maryjane looks like. But hey, no harm done- and I'm sure it was great while it lasted.

Highly suss. The good Cops of Bedfordshire are saying 'wink wink, nudge nudge'. Say no more.
