    What is middle age?

I grew up believing middle age was 50. Then I go to thinking how many people do I actually know that live to 100.

I know a few 90 year old people. Their middle age should have been 45.

I know some 80 year old people. Their middle age should have been 40.

I know several 70 year old people. Their middle age should be about 35.

Fok, me. I am now 51. Did I miss my middle ages?

I think I had my "mid-life crisis" at 26, so I'm not holding out much hope of an "old" age

No Billy, you didn't miss it - in fact, you're right at the cusp of the 'new' middle age since folks are living longer.

I understood 'middle aged' to be 40-50, it's when the mid-life crisis kicks in, kids leave home, marriage partner looks unattractive and yer parents die of old age.

The term fits whatever the author says it fits. A mid-life crises never hit me and I doubt it will. Once you put a number on mid-life you're assuming to know that person's lifespan, but you don't. How about being introduced to someone's family and shaking the hand of some 10-year-old girl and saying, oh, you're middle aged because I have reason to believe you're going to die at 20.

Middle-aged; no longer young, yet unwilling to use the term "old," that time in your life when the side-effects of living begin to take their toll; "getting up to speed" is accompanied with the creaks and crackles of dried out joints and "going the distance" doesn't quite mean what it used to.

The Thais have no such euphemism, how many women have described themselves as "old" when they are 10 - 20 years (sometimes more) younger than I? couldn't count 'em.

They ain't even middle-aged yet, fer crissake.

Considering the age of the posters on this thread????? this is too appropriate.

    TO ALL THE KIDS

    WHO SURVIVED the

    1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and

NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because,

    WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING
    !

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day.

    And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games
at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, ..
no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms.....

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
    lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or usually just sang out their name and if we could see them we walked on in.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

    HOW TO

    DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them.
    CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good .

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

Sent to me by my sister who is also "middle aged" lol

Middle age is when you are old enough to see policeman the age of your kids, but still young enough to be able to do something fun enough to be arrested by them for.

    Christ... are you really??
you look nearly as dashing as me in those pics and I am notably young looking for my age.

BTW, I'm nearly 37 and have been middle aged for at least the last 10 years.

I wouldn't have made it to 50 if I'd stopped drinking. A few beers every night helps me relax, put things in perspective and chill out to get ready for the next day.

To be honest with you, when I amble about Korat and see the horrible condition most of my cohorts are in I'm proud that at age 57 I can still run five miles a day, do another 20 minutes of weight work and stretching and still enjoy a full day with a 15 to 30 K bike ride before happy hour.

Middle age is what you do when you're afraid you're ready to give up.

I'll be forty this year, I'm starting to feel middle aged but when I really think about how I feel inside I'm still the same immature idiot I have always been only heavier with less hair. I don't know if this is a good thing, surely I've gained some experience during my adult life but I'm foked if I can think of anything.

Life expectancy actually has not increased that much since 1900 if you exclude child mortality rates.

More significantly, is that the quality of life has improved because or greater nutrition awareness, bio-physiological knowledge and medical technology.

    At 51....you's just a baby.
