A Tuk Tuk Race Across Asia!

Madness or pure Adventure?


On the 10th of March 2012 I, along with 2 other Teakdoor Members, Chico The Fox and BKK Spideman, will embark on an epic journey from Krabi to Jakarta in a Tuk Tuk.


We are doing this to raise money for Operation Smile Thailand, Operation Smile Thailand - How to Help - Donate.


But before I get into that, lets look at what we are actually doing.


The Facts:

• 1. It's fucking cool!
• 2. It's fucking Dangerous
• 3. The 3rd rule of the tuk tuk run is you don't talk about number 2
• Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are full of creepy crawlys
• It's more than 2400 km between Jakarta and Krabi
• I don't know the way
• We have no support along the way
• We have no route
• We must be in Pennang “Butterwoth Port” by the 14th of March to catch the ferry.
• My Tuk Tuk guy is not picking up his phone
• It only costs 15,000bt to fix one child with a cleft lip
• All three of us enjoy a beer
• Tomato Ketchup travels at a speed of 23km per year

The idea of the race is that we get lost and break down a lot. The tuk tuks are not new and they aren't even Thai. They are the Bembo style Indonesian ones. Initially the race was going to be Bangkok- Jakarta but because of the floods the last race finished in Krabi so that's where the Tuk Tuks are in storage at the moment.

I personally have been on the waiting list for 2 years to be on the Indian leg of the adventure but they contacted me to see if I would be interested in the Asian leg and I was up for it.


Initially there was going to be a camera crew following us, spearheaded by the noted Richie Moore Richie Moore - IMDb who is famous for his work on The Hangover part 2 and Mission Impossible but it has been since down scaled to a photo campaign as tuk tuks are illeagal in Malaysia.


The campaign will be called 1000 smiles and is easy to keep up with here.

Please put yourself in their shoes just for 1 minute. The ridicule, the laughter from other kids and being a social out cast from the rest of the group. This can be fixed.

I'm looking for whatever I can get but I'm also interested in the big business owners among you. This could be part of you yearly CSR and its a very worthy cause. Please donate today if you are able to and give anything you can. It's only 15,000bt per kid and I'm looking for a million baht. That's about 60 kids (plus expenses) Dig deep guys!

That's the way we are going. They don't allow tuk tuks in Singapore. Tight bastards. But Sumatra should be fun.

Are you getting the ferry to Belawan in Sumatra ?

On google maps, it looks like there's only one road that goes all the way down in Sumatra, you can't really go wrong, unless you get kidnapped, which looks a good possibility

Piracy is a problem in Malaysia - and we're not talking about a few fake Rolex's and a new release DVD which was actually captured on a mobile phone by a bloke in row 5! We mean bandits in boats who want you for the ransom you'll fetch. Don't be mistaken, this is no swashbuckling adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow - these pirates mean business!

What To Do
If you do run into some unlucky trouble, keep the following in mind:

The pirates may in fact NOT have a talking parrot.
Remember that each kidnapping situation is different, so what you’ve seen on TV may not apply to you.
Attempt to relate to the kidnappers by speaking their language (if you can), this may help build some kind of rapport.
Keep track of time. You may be held for a considerable amount of time, so its best not to become confused about the time of day.
Maintain your dignity.
Build a rapport with anyone who is captive with you. They may be useful for an escape and so that's a friend you want to keep!
Attempt to maintain your physical condition. Just like when you’re chained to your office chair, its important to keep your legs moving.
Attempt to maintain your mental health. Daydreaming, running through daily routines - these activities will help you keep hold of your grip on reality.
Take notes on your captors and where they are holding you. This information may be valuable when you have been rescued or are able to signal for help.

Everyone I've spoke to says that Mudan is really good.

The beer Chang rep told me the other day that the Sedao border is full of G clubs and hot chicks. Looking forward to that bit.

You will need anti Malaria drugs for Sumatra and Indonesia mate
