Harry Redknapp and Milan Mandaric to stand trial for tax evasion at Portsmouth FC on or after January 23, 2012

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp will stand trial for tax evasion early in the New Year.

Redknapp, 65, charged under his full name Henry James Redknapp, and former Portsmouth owner Milan Mandaric are charged with two counts of cheating the public revenue dating from their involvement at the south-coast club in 2007.

It is alleged that the pair fraudulently concealed payments totalling $295,000 from HM Revenue and Customs by paying the money into a Monaco bank account opened by Redknapp specifically for the purpose.

The payments are alleged to have been made by Mandaric in two tranches, one of $145,000 and a second of $150,000, between April 1 2002 and Nov 28 2007.

The Crown alleges that the payments were made “with intent to defraud and to the prejudice of HM Revenue and Customs as a result of or in connection with Henry James Redknapp’s employment and as a reward for services.” The trial has been scheduled to start on or after Jan 23 next year and is expected to last for two weeks.

The Spurs manager, who has been tipped to take over the England job from Fabio Capello, is currently recovering from a heart procedure and has been told by his doctors to stay away from training and matches for up to five weeks in order that he can properly recover.



Redknapp will be expected to attend the trial, to be held at Southwark Crown Court in London, and is likely to be away from Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground for around two weeks. This could limit his input into three crucial league fixtures and an FA Cup tie as the club chase a place in the Champions League.
Tottenham will travel to Manchester City on the day before the trial, Sunday Jan 22, and will hope to be in the draw for the fourth round of the FA Cup, which will be held on the following weekend.
They then play Wigan at home on Tuesday Jan 31, and then face another important league fixture at Anfield on Saturday Feb 4, by which time the trial may have concluded.
Redknapp and Mandaric, now chairman of Sheffield Wednesday, both face two charges of cheating the public revenue contrary to common law.



The full indictment against Mandaric and Redknapp reads:

Count one: Milan Mandaric and Henry James Redknapp, between the 1st day of April 2002 and the 28th day of Nov 2007, at the material times respectively the Chairman and the Football Manager of Portsmouth City Football Club Limited, with intent to defraud and to the prejudice of HM Revenue and Customs, arranged for $145,000, paid by Milan Mandaric as a result of or in connection with Henry James Redknapp’s employment and as a reward for services, to be transferred to a Monaco bank account opened by Henry James Redknapp for that purpose, in order to conceal the said emolument from HM Revenue and Customs and evade the payment of Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions thereon (whether by the operation of PAYE by the club or otherwise).
Count two: Milan Mandaric, between the 1st day of May 2004 and the 28th day of November 2007, at the material times the Chairman and the Football Manager of Portsmouth City Football Club Limited, with intent to defraud and to the prejudice of HM Revenue and Customs, arranged for $150,000, paid by Milan Mandaric as a result of or in connection with Henry James Redknapp’s employment and as a reward for services, to be transferred to a Monaco bank account opened by Henry James Redknapp for that purpose, in order to conceal the said employment income from HM Revenue and Customs and evade the payment of Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions thereon (whether by the operation of PAYE by the club or otherwise).

He can probably kiss the England job good bye.

For the sums involved, surely the revenue would be better advised to better act in the public interest and pursue jucier targets like Murdoch and 98 of the top 100 FTSE companies
