Golf swing - slicing the ball!

    Fellow golfers

Do you have any recommendations what to do when the ball keeps spinning off to the right.

For instance, I hit my driver well and the ball (mid flight) - so around 120 yrds - travels straight and keeps climbing which is great but then during this flight it gradually fads off to the right landing 30 yrds or worse to the right of my target.

I feel that overall my swing is ok and I have tried to slow my swing down and adjust my wrist so it stays as flat as possible on the top of the swing but once I connect with that ball those suckers are going right, every time..

The funny thing is the land consistently in the same area every time - all I need is that key to unlock the slice then I am away.

    any suggestions?

Your hands are out in front of the clubhead as you swing through the ball... I have the same problem when I try to put that extra little umph on the ball... One quick way to counteract it is to move your right foot back in your stance... This does not address your swing problems, but minimizes the effects...

I suffered the same problem when I first started playing and found if I moved my left foot about an inch or two forward (and in line with your right foot) the slice disappeared and I actually developed a draw.

Grip same, swing same just your left foot an inch or so forward and when you address the ball.

Thats presuming you are a right handed player.

Yep, stop wasting your time on a golf course and concentrate on something more fulfilling, like chasing bar tarts.

Everyone,s got a different tip to cure a slice so I will chip in from the edge of the green with mine ..

Ok number one try to adopt a neutral grip ie . thumbs dead in line straight down the shaft ,, grip firm but NOT LIKE YOUR TRYING TO KILL IT .

Now then thats sorted address the ball as normal relax THEN try and remove ALL thoughts from your head and assuming you are right handed concentrate 100% your thoughts onto your LEFT shoulder ,, now this is where you initiate your swing from,,, ie dont pull the club back with your right hand PUSH it away with your left shoulder ...........if you follow this it will feel strange to begin with , but you will begin to draw the ball as your right hand will find it impossible to come through in front too early ,, good luck mate ..

If non of that works lear to shout Siiiiiiiiiiii !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Using too much rist.
Leaning back as you hit the ball.

All ok if you give it all you got, I mean spank the bastard.

Actually, not a bad technique to remember if you do wanna go right though.
Stiffen your stance, and maybe lower your hands a little at address if you wanna hit it straighter.

Anybody who plays golf should be beaten to death with a 6 iron. All golf courses could then be turned into picnic and BBQ areas for normal people to enjoy.

had a similar problem years ago. Pro tells me (amongst otheer bad habits I had developed) that I was gripping too tight with my right hand. His idea was whichever hand was tighter whilst swinging (right hander) is which was the ball would deviate.
    Hope this helps.

There are a lot of reasons why we slice though. Footwork, swing/grip/technique.

You've got an outside in swing which imparts L to R spin on the ball. You need to sort it out on the driving range. Work on developing a swing that comes from the inside out. Place a board above the tee parallel to your stance and keep your downswing inside the line of the board.

spot on bert,90%of golfers slice because they are attacking the ball from the outside in.another good trick is make your back face the target at the top of your backswing.this will help you come from the inside creating a draw.

Exactly as I quoted above and by moving your left foot slightly forward when addressing the ball on the tee as a right hander.

Slicing the ball also is called blocking meaning you are not turning your wrist and upon ball impact leaving the club face slightly open.

Thanks guys, this guy also suggests a number of good ideas.

I have been to the driving range all weekend in the hope of trying to fix this slice. Paying attention to all the comments made here I tried to implement these but the trouble is my brain goes into overload and being relaxed on address is near impossible - at least at the moment.

Humbert sums it up saying that I could be coming from the outside in and this creates spin on the ball. Also I will go back down there later today and work on those feet positions a little to try and minimize the slice (although I can feel my back twitch if the stance is too far away from being horizontal to the ball.

    Practice, practice, practice...

Oh, and with regards to Astasmin's comment. What is a troll? The driving range only cost's £3 for 50 balls and is the only hobby I have right now to keep my brain for going into meltdown.

Many golfers who put spin on the ball off the tee may be trying to strike the ball hard by swinging fast believing that the ball will travel further.

    Hope this vid helps

It is so true. You step up, and see the markers out there in the distance and get this overwhelming urge to hit that ball as hard as possible: even when I tell myself 'go slow' I still end up hitting it far too hard.

Swing easy is very good advice, even if I was hitting that ball just 190-200yrds, as long as it was straight and consistent, I would be a very happy man.

My advice would be to loosen your grip on the club as the tighter your grip the more tense the muscles. Try to get a nice smooth tempo going with the swing and as someone mentioned transfer your weight forward.

I recommend people to watch Fred Couple's swing, a long hitter but with seemingly very little effort. Fred has an incredible graceful swing.

If one finds it difficult to slow ones swing down then try hitting just a yard past the ball, the final follow through being just for show. Monty, the showman is a fine example of this technique. The ball should travel straighter as less spin is being put on the ball.

It's quite surprising how much further the ball will travel if you can achieve a smooth swing.

Taking your time, walking at a leisurely pace, will help the way you approach the game and staying relaxed when you address the ball will also assist.

Swing tempo isn't that difficult to master although at first you may have to start crooning things like ''straight down the middle'' just to remind yourself to stay loose (much to the annoyance of your playing partners)

Someone once said to me a few years back, just remember the word KISS. (Keep it simple stupid) after all, golf is an easy game that is made extemely diffcult by humans.

These words, as the rest of your post, makes a very interesting read indeed.

I have just arrived back from the golf range for the third time this weekend - I have only spent £10.50 this weekend by the way Astasanim - and by slowing down my first three drives THEY WENT STRAIGHT, but only reaching around 180yrds or so.

Unfortunately I tried to up the tempo on the subsequent shots and, yep, they went right again, adding to the neat pile I made to yesterdays collection.

I do envy those of you that play well and play will a level of consistency, I would surely love to play this game with some degree of fluidity, but it will come, one day.

Thanks for all the posts thus far and please, if anybody is willing, feel free to add some videos of your swing.
