Wins not points to decide F1 title

"Formula One chiefs ruled on Tuesday that as of this season the coveted drivers' championship title will be awarded to the driver who wins the most races, and not he who collects most points."

New rule put in place to make F1 more exciting. I think it's a good move but many in F1 world oppose the rule stating it would make the sport more dangerous.

    Any thought on this?

Nope, after an outcry from the teams, it won't happen until 2010.

I think it is a great idea Norts!

Go for broke driving and the teams will still have a great influence on the final result anyway.

And if two drivers end the season with the same number of wins, how will ties by broken?

Cry babies. Must have missed that bit.

Anyway, will it be a good idea in 2010?

Never saw a F1 pilot who didn't want to win at all costs anyway... Bring it on is what I say...

Australian F1 this weekend to kick off the season... Can't wait...

Can't believe that Brawn GP is at the top of the time charts so far... Guess there's a lot of embarrassed Honda engineers lurking in the wings as they couldn't get the job done with Honda power... Now the same team is at the top of the charts using Merc power... Oh the shame...
Give a man a match, and he'll be warm for a minute, but set him on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

True, but this doesn't apply to team managers.

Remember Barricello being ordered to let Shumacher overtake so that he could win the race?

Surely changing the points system would make more sense.

This basically sets up two races, the top 3 or 4 drivers racing for wins, the rest racing for points.

If a top driver spins or has a problem his race is basically over, where in the past he would have tried to get a few points from a 5th or 6th place.

i don't have a big problem with this change just all the changes in general. i'm a long time fan, always will be but it seems the governing bodies just don't know what to do to boost viewership. i can't even keep track of all the changes anymore.
f1 was fine for the longest time...in what i consider the heydays, the 80's and 90's.

I agree. While I suppose making the sport "safer" is a noble goal it has taken much from the sport. The constant rules changes to "slow" down the cars coupled with track changes to cut speed really have a derogatory effect on excitement. Also, too many circuits where over taking is virtually impossible where making the pole winner a near sure race winner. These circuits need to be taken off the schedule or modified to give more over taking possibilities.

....and this new rule would increase the chances of this happening, as each team would only be able to have one driver going for the championship

I think they should go back to how it was a few years ago, 10 points for 1st
6 points for 2nd. Surely enough of an incentive to get the job done. By the way
looking forward to this weeks race.

The team thing does make this very possible. Given efforts of F1 to cut cost maybe one car per team would make sense?

The new aero packages are 'supposed' to make overtaking much easier as the trailing car will be subjected to less turbulence from the leading car...

The economies of scale prohibit 1 car teams any longer... Not economically feasible...

The past 2 seasons IMO have been very competitive & entertaining... Most drivers & manufacturers to win races in a single season than has been in decades...

Yeah, I'm a Schmi fan, but it got a bit old with him running away with the field in every race for a decade...

Trouble with F1 nowadays, is that it's 90% car and 10% driver. Boring.

Getting rid of traction control helped this a little but still not enough.

There are a couple of exceptional drivers who do well in spite of car performance. Alonso is one IMO.

Won't all-or-nothing stakes result in more aggressive driving? And more crashes? Especially toward the end of the race.

Serious "egg on face" for Honda, good to see the old war horse Rubens back in contention.
Notice Bransons smile was twice as wide as usual.
