    2009 Tennis Thread

Just to piss CMN off, though I'd start this year tennis thread...

Andy Murray completed his preparation for the new tennis season with a hugely encouraging win over world number one Rafael Nadal in Abu Dhabi.
The British number one followed up Friday's defeat of Roger Federer with a 6-4 5-7 6-3 win over Nadal in the final of the exhibition tournament.

No ranking points for that event though and Murray is still quite away behind the top 3 in terms of points as they are on a 12 month rolling basis, but a good run at the Aussie open will see him close the gap as he got knocked out in the first round last year, can see him being ranked 2 in the world by years end.

    Murray through to Qatar quarters

Murray is looking to defend the title he won in Doha last year

Britain's Andy Murray continued his defence of the Qatar Open title with an easy 6-2 6-4 win over Germany's Philipp Petzschner to reach the quarter-finals.
The world number four gave a near faultless display, dominating with some booming forehands, tireless defence and unplayable drop shots.
Murray will now face Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, who beat Alex Peya 7-5 6-3.
Rafael Nadal beat Slovak Karol Beck 6-1 6-2, while Roger Federer plays Italian Andreas Seppi later on Wednesday.
It was Murray's first meeting with the 24-year-old Petzschner, ranked 66 in the world, and he won the first set in 37 minutes.
The Scot broke in game three of the second set to quickly wrap the game up.

Unfortunately Murray supports Hibs which means he'll always be a loser. Always.

I'm telling you number 2 by the end of the year, probably quite some time before then if he can stay fit.

Murray too good for Federer again

Murray specifically targeted Federer's weaker backhand side

Defending champion Andy Murray reached the final of the Qatar Open with a 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 6-2 win over Roger Federer.
The victory was Murray's fifth against the former world number one in eight meetings as the Scot continued his remarkable unbeaten start to 2009.
Federer claimed a tight first set after a tense tie-break.
But Murray stormed back and broke the Swiss star's serve twice in the second set to draw level, before clinching the match in style in the deciding set.

If Andy Murray beats Federer again does he get to keep him? I bet he is getting tired of creaming his Swiss ass.

4-1 up in the second. 2 breaks. The Pom is killing Roddick.

Andy Murray continued to justify his tag as one of the favourites for the Australian Open by successfully defending his Qatar Open title on Saturday.
The British number one maintained his winning start to the year with a 6-4 6-2 victory over world number eight Andy Roddick in Doha.
Showing no signs of the back injury, which threatened his semi-final hopes against Roger Federer, the world number four produced a stunning array of shots en route to claiming his ninth career title.
It was honours even in the first set before Murray produced a sublime slice lob that left Roddick reaching for thin air with an attempted smash.
Having saved his serve he then went on to produce some similarly scintillating shots in breaking in the fifth game to love.
He closed out the set after dropping just five points on serve - a statistic, which shows just how dominant the British number one actually was.
A double fault left the 21-year-old in trouble at 30-0 down in the second game of the second set, but again he showed fighting quality to take the next four consecutive points to save the game and level at 1-1.
He then capitalised by breaking the fourth seed with ease in the third and fifth games of the match and he went on to close out for his sixth victory in eight against Roddick.

If he wasn't playing tennis he'd be on methadone.
