Ricky Ponting retires from test cricket...His wig vows to carry on.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has announced he will retire from international cricket at the end of the third Test against South Africa.
The 37-year-old, who is the second highest run scorer in Test history after Sachin Tendulkar, will play his 168th Test in Perth on Friday.
"I haven't been performing consistently over the last 12 to 18 months," he said. "I believe now is the right time.
"This is a decision not made by the selectors, it was made by me."
Ponting has scored 13,366 runs at an average of 52.21 in his career, but he has struggled for form in the current series with South Africa.
He scored just 20 runs in the two drawn Test matches and, despite receiving the support of coach Mickey Arthur, he decided to make way.
The Tasmanian admitted that his recent poor form had prompted the decision to call time on an international career that began in 1995.
Yes the rug was a mess, he was sometimes a prat both socially and on the cricket field but who cannot give him his dues as a successful cricketer.Originally Posted by daveboy

2. He is one of only three players in history to have scored 13,000 Test runs.
3. Statistically, he is the most successful captain of all time, with 48 victories in 77 Tests between 2004 and 31 December 2010.
4. As a player he is also the only cricketer in history to be involved in 100 Test victories.
Good on you Ricky and thanks for the memories.
test average over 50....says it all.....
Best stat though is the 3 lost Ashes Series......
Wish I could spend the weekend watching the third test....
Unfortunately that will follow him around the rest of his life.Originally Posted by Bobcock

There was one bad decision in those series (Edgbaston).
I think the shit bowling attack lead my Mitchell Johnson's mother were far mnore to blame for the last series. Of course none of it was to do with England being a better team at the time.
Great servant for Cricket Australia
Tendulkar next?
Undoubtedly our best batsman sine the Don.
He was also undoubtedly our worst ever Captain. His problem was he never learnt how to be one, the team he played in when he inherited the job captained itself. Once the retirements were over he was required to be a smart Captain and just wasn't up for it.
It's quite a mystery that he did not learn more from playing under SW. just no talent for it perhaps.
If Warne hadn't been such a public dope he would have sailed through the late 2000's as possibly out best Captain and probably extended his career..
come on aussie come on
The stage is set for him today...
Oh well!
Perth looks a lively wicket
If not for Wade Australia would be in even a bigger hole.
When I ran through the Aussie bowling attack I could not believe the line up compared to the last test.
Starc, Hastings, Watson and Johnson???????? Where did they come from??????
7/118
Complete change from the first two games. But they proved it a good choice yesterday, pity the batsmen cannot back it up today. (kinda proves good2bhappy's point, 17 wickets in 4 sessions)Originally Posted by Loy Toy
How on earth are they going to settle a unified team, as the South African side seems to be when they are selecting a different bowling attack for each game.Originally Posted by Sir Wilson
In fact I have never heard of such a selection policy before and particularly as I thought the Aussie bowling attack in the last test could have done a great job on this wicket.
bowling SA out for 225 is not badOriginally Posted by Loy Toy
Correct, it's not been done before. But they were resting fatigued and injured bowlers, and the fact that this new line up skittled the SA top order for fuck all proves it was a good decision.Originally Posted by Loy Toy
^ Maybe not as we are all out for 163.
We tried the bowler rotation policy years ago with disastrous results IIRC.
Siddle went to great lengths to assure everyone he was recovered and ready to go..
Australia you're shit and you know you are .

Sorry bob I've corrected, it won't happen again.
The South Africans certainly showed how shit England were the last series they played.Originally Posted by daveboy
Anyway they still three days to play Dave.
Let's see how good the Aussies really are.
I have a feeling Ponting is going to go out with a bang.
I feel he'll go out on a duck.
I don't think the Saffa's are going to be nice to him, and he hasn't grafted a hard fought score in quite some time.
