Thursday night was one for the history books of the Faroese national handball team.
Well, it may not have ended with a victory in the Faroese's first ever tournament match, but the national handball team, which has Danish Peter Bredsdorff-Larsen as coach, still got an experience out of the ordinary.
The debut match, which ended 32-29 in favor of the Slovenian opponents, was watched from the batters by up to a tenth of the entire Faroese population, writes Ritzau.
5,000 attending, noisy fans created a sound inferno, and the next day the national coach is therefore - despite the defeat - left with an experience he will never forget.
"For the whole of the Faroe Islands and the thousands of people who were down here, it was a historic day. It was a folk festival that moved to Berlin. We are proud to say that we have already shown our legitimacy on the track at the European Championships, but we have also won medals off the field with that support," says Peter Bredsdorff-Larsen.

The impressive support from the Faroese population, which totals approximately 50,000, therefore also creates fertile ground for optimism ahead of the rest of the tournament, says Peter Bredsdorff-Larsen.
Even though the next opponent is Norway and probably has one or two more big stars on the team sheet than the Faroe Islands, with the great support behind him, he will go into the clash with his head held high.
"It was a fantastic setting and a home ground for the Faroe Islands. It is fantastic to be part of the euphoria surrounding handball in the Faroe Islands," says Peter Bredsdorff-Larsen.
'Everyone will have problems against the Faroe Islands'
However, it was not only the Faroese national coach who was blown away by the great support.
Slovenian player Miha Zarabec, even though he played for the opposing team, was also very enthusiastic about the Faroese handball fans.
"It was a great atmosphere. They live for this sport. All credit to them. We play in Germany, but so many people from the Faroe Islands have come here. I'm happy for them and also that we won," Zarabec told Norwegian media outlet VG.

At the same time, the Slovenian warns the Norwegian national team that the Faroese with such good support behind them will cause them problems.
"In a very difficult group, I am sure that everyone will have problems against the Faroe Islands," he said.
