Sarina Wiegman will coach Great Britain's women's football team at the 2024 Olympics, if the team qualifies, the English Football Association confirmed Wednesday.

England manager Wiegman steered the Lionesses to the 2023 World Cup final, and also led them to victory in the Euros in 2022. She has been selected as the standout candidate to lead Team GB to Paris in 2024, but only if the team qualifies.

With two spots on offer for European teams for the Olympics, alongside hosts France, Team GB's hopes are reliant on England's fortunes in the UEFA women's Nations League. The Lionesses are the team nominated as the home nation who can qualify Team GB for Paris.

To qualify for Paris 2024, England need to top a Nations League group that features Netherlands, Scotland and Belgium. If they do that, they'll qualify for the Nations League finals alongside the three other group winners. The top two sides then progress to the Olympics, though this'll be stretched to the third-best-placed side if hosts France reach the Nations League final.

"My full focus is on the Nations League campaign, but I would of course be very excited if the chance came to lead Team GB next summer. It would be an honour," Wiegman said. "There is still a long way to go, and I prefer to only focus on what we know for sure right now.

"We have to be at our best in the Nations League, where we will face three very strong teams in our group. We have full respect for all our opponents, as they will be doing all they can to win too.

"The Olympics Games is such a special sporting event and, for women's football, one of the biggest stages to play. That is the goal, but we know it cannot happen if we don't do our job in the Nations League. Until that is complete, it would not be right to talk any more about Team GB including speculation about players and any early preparations."

Wiegman previously coached the Netherlands in the delayed 2020 Olympics where they were knocked out in the quarterfinals on penalties to the United States.

China win Asiad women's water polo gold to secure Paris 2024 ticket

China defeated Japan 24-11 to take the women's water polo gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games here on Sunday, ensuring them of a place at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The win also marked China's fourth consecutive Asian Games women's water polo gold medal.

A total of seven teams participated in the women's water polo competition in Hangzhou, playing each other in a round-robin format. China remained undefeated in all six matches for the gold, while Japan won five matches to settle for the silver. Kazakhstan won four matches to finish third.

After winning all their previous matches by a large margin, China carried their momentum into the final clash against Japan, taking a commanding 6-1 lead in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Japan strengthened their defense and created chances at the other end. However, with some superb play from Zhang Jing, Yan Jing and goalkeeper Zhang Jiaqi, China continued to put pressure on their rivals, leading by 13-7 at half-time.

China called the shots again in the third quarter, allowing only two points from Japan, and successfully closed out the game in the final quarter.

Canada sending men's gymnastics team to Olympics for first time since 2008

Canada is sending a men's gymnastics team to the Olympics for the first time since 2008.

Needing a top-12 finish in the team qualification to clinch an Olympic berth, Canada placed fourth at the world artistic gymnastics championships on Sunday to secure their spot.

The group of Rene Cournoyer, Felix Dolci, William Emard, Jayson Rampersad, Zachary Clay and Yanni Chronopoulos will be headed to the 2024 Paris Games thanks to their 249.260 score across six events.

"Leading up to these world championships, the main goal was securing a team spot to the Olympic Games," Cournoyer said. "Mission accomplished."

"There is so much significance to this fourth-place finish and I am so proud of all my teammates," he added.

Cournoyer is the lone member of the team with prior Olympic experience. The Repentigny, Que., native competed at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Canada now looks ahead to competing in the team final on Tuesday.

Japan (258.228), the U.S. (254.528), Great Britain (254.193), Germany (248.862), Italy (248.796), Switzerland (248.192) and China (248.163) will also be in the final.

Canada's women's team advanced to the Olympics at the 2022 worlds.

The squad of three-time Olympian Ellie Black, Laurie Denommee, Sydney Turner, Denelle Pedrick and Emma Spence earned Canada's first-ever team medal at worlds with a bronze.

Caloy Yulo punches ticket to Paris Olympics

Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo has secured a ticket to the Paris Olympics after an impressive comeback in the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships at the Sportspalais in Antwerp, Belgium on Sunday (Manila time).

After faltering on Day 1 of the event following a disastrous performance in the vault, Yulo came out as the highest-ranked eligible athlete in the floor exercise, which is his pet event.

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) announced Yulo's achievement on its Facebook account on Sunday night.

He finished third in the men's floor exercise with 14.600 points after Artem Dolgopyat of Israel (15.100) and Frederick Richard of the US (14.600). But since Dolgyopat and Richard were already qualified to the Olympics prior to the Worlds, Yulo came in as the next eligible participant.

Earlier, Yulo garnered 14.600 points from the preliminaries of the floor exercise, positioning himself for the final.

His qualification more than made up for his errant fall in the vault, which resulted to 0 point.

Yulo joined EJ Obiena among Filipinos who already secured berths in the 2023 Paris Olympics.

He skipped the 19th Asian Games to compete in the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, which is a qualifying tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

    • China's boxers secure another two Olympic berths at Hangzhou Asiad

China's Yang Wenlu and Han Xuezhen clinched two Olympic boxing spots with their victories at the Hangzhou Asian Games here on Sunday.

Yang defeated Nomin-Erdene Tugsjargal of Mongolia 5-0 in the women's 60kg quarterfinal, while Han outclassed Kazakhstan's Sagyndyk Togambay in the men's 92kg semifinal, with both securing 2024 Paris Olympic Games spots.

"I didn't box well in the first round, but I managed to fight back in the second and third rounds to win. I know I'm not alone, as I get full support from everyone here," said Han.

After securing her Olympic berth, China's Wu Yu defeated Yesugen Oyuntsetseg of Mongolia to reach the women's 50kg final.

"I hope to bring home a gold medal and share it with my mother," said Wu.

"To fight in the Paris Olympics is my dream, and I will improve myself day by day to get a good result in 2024 and fulfill my dream," she added.

Also on Sunday, world champion Yang Liu outfought Hwang Hyo Sun of DPR Korea in the women's 66kg quarterfinal and fellow Chinese Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan got the better of Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu of Kyrgyzstan in the men's 80kg quarterfinal.

"My opponent had analyzed me a lot, and that's why he boxed well in the first round. But then I knew his purpose and I could fight back in the last two rounds," said Tuohetaerbieke.

Fellow Chinese Wang Xiangyang lost to Lai Chu-en of Chinese Taipei in the men's 63.5kg quarterfinal.

Paris 2024 comes into focus for Rebeca Andrade and Team Brazil

Third after six of 10 subdivisions, the squad is all but assured to obtain a five-woman team quota for next summer's Olympic Games.

World and Olympic gymnastics champion Rebeca Andrade knew her team had done all it could on Monday (2 October) during their qualifying session at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.

The event is the sport's largest qualifier to next summer's Paris 2024 Olympic Games with nine teams set to join the United States, Great Britain and Canada that obtained their quota spots by taking team medals at last year's global event in Liverpool.

What Andrade didn't know is where they had placed. The 24-year-old couldn't see the Sportpaleis Antwerpen's massive screens that showed the Brazil squad ranked third, behind only the U.S. and GB. Ten teams remain in Monday's final four subdivisions but their Paris quota is all but assured.

"I didn't know until now because I use glasses, I can not see what was on the screen. I know now because you said it to me," Andrade told Olympics.com. "We are really emotional because we did our best, we worked really hard this year to be here with this team so that's why we are emotional. It's always good when you see emotion like this."

The reigning World champion went on to joke about her vision, admitting she can't even see the vault - where she is the Olympic gold medallist - as she sprints toward it.

"I don't see it," Andrade said of the apparatus with a laugh. "When I get in on the springboard, I see it."

Adding later, "I tried to use contact lenses but I didn't like it because I started to see [the beam] really well, and I don't want to see it so well."

Gymnast Aleah Finnegan is the third Filipino athlete to qualify for next year's Paris Olympics.

This was confirmed on Tuesday, after Finnegan competed in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.

Finnegan, 20, emerged as one of the 14 highest-ranked eligible gymnasts after the women's all-around. She compiled a total of 51.366 points across the four apparatus.

She scored 13.400 on the vault, 12.433 on the bars, 12.700 on the balance beam, and 12.833 on the floor exercise to finish 32nd among 117 competitors.

A two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, Finnegan joins fellow gymnast Carlos Yulo and pole vaulter EJ Obiena as part of Team Philippines to Paris next year.

“I’m just so thankful for the Philippines for giving this opportunity for me that I would never have been able to take otherwise,” Finnegan said.

“Just to be here, honoring my family, the Philippines, and honoring my dad who’s in heaven, and all the people who put in so many sacrifices for me to be here, is really just a dream come true,” the 20-year-old said.

In 2021, three major mistakes on the opening night of the US nationals had kept Finnegan from advancing to the US Olympic trials.

Finnegan had thought this would be her final competition as an elite gymnast. But then, the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines asked her to represent them at the 2022 Southeast Asian Games.

Finnegan’s mother Linabelle was born and raised in the Philippines and her oldest sister Hannah had presented the country at the SEA Games about a decade ago, according to a feature on the Olympics website.

“I didn’t really like how my career had come to end, especially so abruptly, too. But, like I said, I had peace with it… I wasn’t really sure if that was a door that I wanted to open again,” Finnegan said, as quoted by the Olympics report.

“However, it was an opportunity that was just laid out in front of me, and I don’t want to use the word silly, but it would have been silly to pass up on it,” she added.

She won four medals at those Games, including team and vault golds. She was the silver medallist in the all-around and on the balance beam.

    Sure……

Hotel Prices in Paris Are Already Up More Than 300% Ahead of 2024 Olympic Games

reap the benefits as hotel prices average more than 300 percent higher than normal.

The astronomical prices for summer 2024 are more than three-and-a-half times the typical summer rates, Bloomberg reported. In total, Paris expects more than 11 million visitors will trek to the city for the Olympic games, which kick off July 26, 2024, with only about 280,000 rooms available per day across the greater Paris region.

Average prices for the week starting July 22 are coming in at $629 per night for a 4-star hotel, according to a Google search. That is a significant increase from the historical average price per night for July of $145 to $378, the search engine noted. It’s even pricier for the week starting July 29 when a 4-star hotel averages $703 per night.

A luxury 5-star hotel for the week of July 22 is coming in at an average of $1,044 per night. While high, it’s a less dramatic increase compared to typical July prices which average as high as $736 per night, according to Google.

Rooms are also booking up quickly with 45 percent of rooms in Paris already reserved, Bloomberg noted. That’s faster than normal since only 3 percent of rooms are typically booked so far in advance.

Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Stephen Curry were among the NBA superstars who said on Monday (Tuesday AEDT) they were interested in playing for the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

An American line-up of NBA talent will seek a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal next year in France, where Durant could become the first US man with four basketball golds.

“I will play in the Olympics next year,” Durant said during media day for the NBA Phoenix Suns.

All-time NBA scoring leader James, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar who won gold in 2008 and 2012, downplayed his interest, saying simply, “Yeah, I do. I do have interest. We’ll see what happens.”

But other players said that four-time NBA champion James, a forward who turns 39 in December, has been a major force behind the scenes in pulling together top players for the 2024 Olympic roster.

“I would love to,” said Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers. “I know Bron is in the forefront of creating a hell of a roster. But that’s first and foremost on how my body is, how my health is, to finish the season.

“It all depends on how well we do and how far we go this season. That would play a lot into my decision on going and playing over in France.”

The 2023 Allianz Sailing World Championships provided the US Sailing Team its first opportunity to secure Olympic berths and the team emerged with four.

A long ten days of competition at the Allianz Sailing World Championships came to a close in The Hague, The Netherlands, with the ILCA 6 Medal Race, where US Sailing Team’s Charlotte Rose secured fifth overall, a personal career best in the Olympic class ILCA 6.

Rose had nothing to lose going into the Medal Race. Entering in fifth overall, she’d managed to put enough points between her and sixth place Emma Plasschaert of Belgium, so the only way she could go was up the leaderboard.

With all points in play above her, Rose sailed an aggressive final race in very light conditions on the North Sea. She rounded the leeward gate in fifth and ultimately dropped back to ninth to close out the race, but stood by her decisions to try mostly anything and give it her all.

“My main goal was to make the medal race, so to finish fifth means the world to me. This is a new personal best,” said Rose, the two-time Youth Worlds Gold Medalist in the ILCA 6 now making her way up the Olympic class circuit.

“It feels really great to qualify the United States for the Olympic Games and to represent the US on the world stage here. The best part of Worlds was being able to close my season on a good note and handle all the conditions I faced this week. It was stressful for sure. I’m happy to have some time off now to reset for the 2024 Worlds in January and the Olympic Trials in Miami.”

In addition to the ILCA 6 berth, the US Sailing Team USA qualified for Paris 2024 in the 49er with top finishes by Andrew Mollerus and Ian MacDiarmid and Ian Barrows, as well as Ian Barrows and Hans Henken. Steph Roble & Maggie Shea locked in the team’s 49erFX berth and Daniela Moroz finished fifth in the Women’s Formula Kite to earn her ticket to Marseilles.

Daniela Moroz was unable to claim a podium finish in the Hague, but a fifth earned the US Team its Women’s Formula Kite berth.

The next opportunity to qualify the United States in the remaining classes is the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile October 28 – November 5.

McClenaghan retains pommel horse world title

Rhys McClenaghan wins second successive pommel horse gold medal at Artistic Gymnastics World Championships

Rhys McClenaghan is a back-to-back world champion after claiming another stunning gold medal in the pommel horse event at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp.

The 24-year-old County Down athlete was last out of the eight finalists in what was a high-profile field, with Great Britain's Max Whitlock and USA's Khoi Young finishing ahead of the Irish man in qualifying.

However, when a Whitlock error took him out of the running, it came down to a battle between Young and McClenaghan for top spot.

Youngster Khoi (20) produced a brilliant routine, but it was no match for McClenaghan who was inch-perfect for a score of 15.100, well up on his qualifying mark of 14.933.

It's the latest success for the Irish athlete who also booked his Paris Olympic spot in the process.

'We’re coming home with that Olympic ticket!’ SA gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz books Paris 2024 spot

South African gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz has booked her ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics, following a top performance at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.

Taking to Instagram to celebrate her achievement on Tuesday, the 21-year-old said: “By God’s grace, I have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. It’s been a long month of competing in three different countries, with its share of ups and downs.

“Not everything went exactly as planned, but we are coming home with an Olympic ticket, and that’s all that matters! Thank you to my incredible team, and I’m blessed to be part of such a special group.”

It will be a second appearance at the Olympics for Rooskrantz, yet still she revealed there were moments of doubt.

“I always feel like these things are so far out of my league, but then I do good things. Like at the Commonwealth Games, I didn’t think I could do it but then I did get to the finals. My biggest goal is to do my personal best.”

As for representing a segment of SA society that typically does not receive the best coverage, Rooskrantz said it was especially important for her to keep breaking new barriers.

First came the devastating right. Then came the tears.

Eumir Marcial of the Philippines knocked out Syria's Ahmad Ghousoon in the second round of the men's 80kg semi-finals at the the Asian Games 2023 to secure a a Paris 2024 boxing quota on Wednesday (4 October).

The Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist ended the fight with 1:49 left in the second round with a pulverizing right hook to Ghousoon, who could bear no more.

Marcial - who openly wept in joy after the match - had Ghousoon on his knees with a body blow earlier in the round before hurling the winning shot that put a period in the contest.

Five of six Olympic quotas awarded at Asian Games in Hangzhou

Korea’s win in the recurve mixed team event at the Asian Games finalised the awarding of the six available Paris 2024 Olympic quota places in Hangzhou.

The Korean women receive one quota place as the pairs gold medallist – rather than in the individual competition – as mixed team is given priority. (The recurve women’s final will be contested by two archers from Korea, too.)

No additional men’s spot will be given to Korea as the country already qualified a full team at the world championships.

This place will be retained for reallocation (in certain cases of returned places or nations upgrading to team quotas). If it is not awarded, it will be made available at the final qualifying tournament.

The two women’s individual quota places available in Hangzhou will go to China – courtesy either Hai Ligan or Li Jiamin, depending on which of them wins the bronze medal match at these home Asian Games – and fifth-placed Indonesian archer Diananda Choirunisa.

China adds a men’s spot, as does Mongolia, courtesy finalists Qi Xiangshuo and Otgonbold Baatarkhuyag.

The next opportunity for Asian archers to qualify for Paris 2024 is the Asian Archery Championships and Asian individual qualifier in early November. Continental spots will also be available at the Pan Am Games in Chile and African Championships in Tunisia before the end of the year.

Brazil finish strong and book their tickets to Paris 2024

In a rematch of the Rio 2016 Olympics final, the South Americans defeated Italy in the tie-breaker at the Maracanăzinho

Seven years after defeating Italy in front of their home fans in a packed Maracanăzinho to triumph at the Rio 2016 Olympics and win their third gold medal in the event, Brazil secured another historic victory against their longtime rivals at the iconic stadium on Sunday.

With a spot at next year’s Paris 2024 Olympics on the line, the South Americans were on the winning side of a dramatic five-set battle at the Volleyball Olympic Qualifying Tournament, topping the Italians 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 25-17, 15-11) to qualify in Pool A.

Madison Corcoran Qualifies Third Irish Boat for Canoe Slalom at Paris 2024

Canoeist Madison Corcoran has qualified for an Olympic quota spot in the K1 Women's event after a countback on quota places at the 2023 European Games in Krakow, Poland.

It means Ireland will have three boats competing in the Canoe Slalom event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the biggest Olympic Irish canoe team since Atlanta 1996.

Corcoran's result is the first Women's spot in Canoe Slalom since London 2012, when Hannah Craig competed for Ireland.

Madison's great placing of 23rd in the European Games allowed Ireland to secure the European continental quota spot, with most other European nations securing their quota spots at the 2023 World Championships, and the rest being behind Ireland in the standings.

The result is also somewhat of a family affair, with Madison's father, Mike Corcoran, having been a member of the 1996 Olympic Team for Canoe Slalom.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Thursday that it has suspended the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) due to Moscow’s illegal efforts to absorb parts of Ukraine.

In a news release Thursday, the committee said that ROC breached the Olympic charter by incorporating four regional sports governing bodies in eastern Ukraine as members of its committee.

“The unilateral decision … constitutes a breach of the Olympic Charter because it violates the territorial integrity of the NOC of Ukraine, as recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in accordance with the Olympic Charter,” the IOC said in its news release.

The four regional sports governing bodies in question are in the Russian occupied Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia.

Russia illegally annexed the front-line territories early in its invasion, and they have remained among the fiercest battlegrounds throughout the war.

The IOC’s executive board has previously recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes be barred from competing in world sporting events due to the invasion. The IOC announced in July that Russia and Belarus will not receive formal invitations to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
