Day one of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Sailing greeted competitors with 11-13 knots of breeze gusting to 15 with 3-5 foot swell for the 470s and 49ers, and slightly calmer conditions for the iQFOiLs and Men's Kites.

Two-time Olympic swimmer Dylan Carter accomplished an ‘A’ standard Olympic qualifying time in the men’s 50 metres freestyle when the Aquatics Sports Association of T&T (ASATT) Invitational Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva, Trinidad recently.

The 27-year-old, who opted out of the 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly on previously, clocked a time of 21.69 seconds as the lone competitor in the Time Trial final to go under the ‘A’ standard qualification time for the Paris Olympics 2024 of 21.96 seconds.

Earlier this year, Carter became the first T&T athlete to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, when he splashed to gold in the men’s 100m freestyle event at the 2023 TYR Pro Swim Series in Ft. Lauderdale, in a new national record time of 48.24 seconds, erasing his own previous record, dipping below ‘A’ standard of 48.34.

First USA Shooting Athletes Qualify for Olympic Games Paris 2024

The first USA Shooting athletes, Ivan Roe, Mary Tucker, Sagen Maddalena, Alexis Lagan, and Katelyn Abeln, have qualified for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 after the conclusion of the third air gun trials selection match in Anniston, Alabama, Jan.7.

Ivan Roe, a Manhattan, Montana, native, will be making his Olympic debut in Paris for Men’s Air Rifle. Roe was a member of the 2023 International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Championship team and the 2022 Championships of the Americas (CAT) team where he earned a gold medal and an Olympic quota for the U.S. Roe is currently a sergeant in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Moore, Georgia.

“I am super excited,” said Roe. “This is a huge relief off of my shoulders. During the finals, I was just committing to the process. I wasn’t focused on Paris at all. I was just trying to shoot the best shot I could.”

Mary Tucker, a Tokyo 2020 silver Olympic medalist, will be making her second Games appearance in Paris for Women’s Air Rifle. Tucker, a Sarasota, Florida, native, most recently earned three medals at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Tucker also brought home a gold medal at the 2023 ISSF World Championship where she helped set a new team record. Tucker has seen success worldwide having earned over 24 medals internationally.

Sagen Maddalena, of Groveland California, is also making her second Olympic Games appearance after competing in Tokyo. Maddalena qualified for the Paris team in Women’s Air Rifle. Maddalena saw a successful 2023 season. At the 2023 Pan American Games she was crowned Women’s Air Rifle champion and earned a total of three medals. She earned two more medals at the 2023 ISSF World Championship.

“This is pretty surreal, the competition was so tough,” said Maddalena. “I can’t believe I made it. I am proud of myself, and I think it’s awesome, but I worked for it. I definitely put in the miles and hours.”

Maddalena is currently a sergeant in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and previously shot for the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Alexis “Lexi” Lagan, a Boulder City, Nevada, native, is among the returning Olympians from the Tokyo 2020 Games. Lagan qualified in Women’s Air Pistol for the 2024 Games. She most recently earned a silver medal in the event at the 2023 Pan American Games where she also secured the U.S a quota for Paris. Lagan’s accomplishments don’t stop there. She is a three-time medalist from the 2022 CAT Games and a six-time national champion.

Katelyn Abeln, of Douglasville, Georgia, will be making her Olympic debut this year. Abeln, who currently shoots for The Ohio State University, also qualified in Women’s Air Pistol. Abeln was on the 2023 ISSF World Championship team and the 2022 CAT Games team, where she earned three medals.

“I don’t think it has sunk in yet,” said Abeln when asked how she felt about qualifying for her first Olympic Games. “I am very grateful all of this hard work has finally paid off. This has been the goal for the past four years and even since I started shooting.”

Abeln started shooting competitively when she was 12 years old. Her dad was her coach up until she started to shoot collegiately. Abeln mentioned that she is excited to represent the Red White and Blue on the Olympic stage.

Ireland's Eve McMahon secures quota spot for Paris 2024 sailing regatta

With one race to spare, Eve McMahon secured a quota spot for Ireland sailing in the women’s one person dinghy for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

By virtue of finishing in the top 30 at the ILCA6 World Championships, which concluded on Wednesday (10 January) in Mar del Plata, Argentina, McMahon secured the spot for the Olympic extravaganza hosted in Marseille in less than seven months' time.

"The Olympics has always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl," said a buzzing McMahon prior to the championships. "I put in all the hard work and I train every day for it. So hopefully it all pays off."

Pay off it did with McMahon securing the spot ahead of the final race due to being mathematically unbeatable for Olympic qualification, no matter the final-day result.

Rhythm Sangwan won the Olympic quota with a bronze medal in women’s 25-metre sports pistol in the Asian shooting championship in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Thursday.

It was the 16th Olympic quota for the Paris Games for Indian shooting, already an improvement from the 15 shooters fielded for the Tokyo Olympics. A country can win a maximum of 24 Olympic quota places.

India has won all possible eight quotas in rifle and six in pistol, apart from two in shotgun. Manu Bhaker had won the first quota in sports pistol

Burnaby wrestler Justina Di Stasio qualifies for 2024 Summer Olympics

Justina Di Stasio will compete on the biggest stage of her career next year under the title of "Olympian."

The Burnaby wrestler is heading to the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics with Canada, officially qualifying last weekend at the Team Trials.

The competition in Edmonton, Alta., solidified 12 athletes for the national roster off to France next July and August, including Di Stasio and five other women's wrestlers.

It's the latest of Di Stasio's illustrious résumé that recently included a gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 World Championships, as well as a bronze at the 2023 Pan American Championships.

The 30-year-old Norway House Cree Nation member was the number-one seed in her 76 kg weight class going into the trials, securing a bye to the final bout as a result of her initial ranking.

If Carlos Alcaraz can win just one title in 2024, the Spanish tennis star would pick the Olympic gold medal.

Alcaraz, who won the U.S. Open and Wimbledon the last two years, said last week that his goals this year are to win another one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, plus an Olympic medal. He added that, if he could only have one of those things, it would be the Olympic gold medal because it would be a dream realized, according to Spanish media.

Alcaraz made the comments at an exhibition last week in his home region of Murcia, where he beat countryman Roberto Bautista Agut in the Carlos Alcaraz Cup.

While some tennis players put the Olympics a level below the four Slams, Alcaraz has repeatedly spoken highly of the Games.

    Just a moment...

As ever in France, there will be potential for protest activity to cause operational disruption

Protest activity will remain likely throughout the event, potentially disrupting inbound travel, as well as movement within Paris. The Olympics are increasingly unpopular in France: 58% of the population supported the Games as of June 2023, down from 76% in September 2021.

Critics question the high level of spending on the Olympics as the government seeks to control spending on essential public services such as healthcare.

Locals will likely also resent government attempts to prioritise (wealthy) international travellers at the expense of the Parisian population, meaning that local politics could drive a narrative of “us against them” during the events.

This sustains a threat of socioeconomic unrest and subsequent operational disruption. Furthermore, headline events will take place in the Stade de France, located in the suburb of Saint-Denis – one of Paris’s least affluent areas, and where socioeconomic unrest is relatively frequent, most recently in June-July 2023 as part of wider riots.

Activist groups also have a track record of spectacular actions during sporting events, including parachute drops during football games. Industries with high carbon emissions, such as oil and gas, remain the more likely targets of such protest actions.

    • Protests are generally scheduled in advance and along set routes, meaning that monitoring and alternate route planning can mitigate potential disruption.
    • The local political climate will remain a key indicator to watch to assess the potential for protests, particularly those motivated by socioeconomic concerns.

World silver medalist CJ Nickolas is the first U.S. taekwondo athlete to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Nickolas, 22, qualified early via his world ranking — No. 2 in the 80kg division.

Had another American been in the top 20 in the world, Nickolas would have had to face him for the spot at a trials event this week. But the next highest-ranked American in the division is 21st in the world (Michael Rodriguez).

In May, Nickolas became the first American man to win a world taekwondo championships medal since 2009 with his 80kg silver.

This weekend, the road to the Paris Olympics goes through San Jose as nation’s top fencers are in town for a major Olympic qualifying event.

Bay Area native and three-time Olympian Alexander Massialas, 29, was at the San Jose Convention Center not to compete in this weekend's North American Cup, but to receive his Fencing World Cup Gold Medal that he earned last season.

Massialas is currently the world's top men's fencer. Greg Massialas, Alexander's father, who's also his coach and an Olympian himself was at the event with him.

“Winning and being number one in the world over the year is a very special thing. Of course, we're really getting ready for the end line, which is Paris 2024 Olympics,” said Greg Massialas.

    • The Women’s 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon Will Be the Most Diverse in History

On February 3 in Orlando, Florida, 160 women will toe the line at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. It’s the most exclusive field of women’s American marathoning talent ever assembled, down from more than 450 participants in 2020, largely because of the stiffer qualifying mark of 2 : 37 : 00 for the full marathon and 1 : 12 : 00 for the half.

The top three finishers (who have surpassed the 2 : 29 : 30 time since the start of the qualifying period) will earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team and run the marathon in the Paris Olympics on August 11.

Despite a marathon qualifying time that’s eight minutes faster than the previous Olympic qualifying cycle, this year’s women’s field contains more runners of color than ever. Roughly 13 percent of the field—approximately 20 athletes—are women of color, according to statistics from USA Track and Field.

We spoke with eight of these women to find out what racing a marathon with the chance to represent their country, and also their communities, means to them.

Good luck getting a seat at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. The only tickets left are almost $3,000.

Sticker shock came for Beyonce, and it's here for the 2024 Paris Olympics, too.

The summer sporting event is seven months away and will run from July 26 to August 11, but most of the seats for the opening ceremony — which often promises to be a spectacle of its own — have been snatched up.

The Olympics website shows that the only tickets left promise a front-and-center view of the Eiffel Tower for €2,700 or about $2,930. For the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the highest-priced opening ceremony tickets cost ¥300,000 or about $2,025.

Tickets for popular Olympic events, including swimming and gymnastics, are also sold out and only available through special "hospitality packages."

The last two continental qualification events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games finished in the last weekend of January, with two teams earning their tickets to competition, as Sweden and Egypt clinched the last two berths, joining hosts France, world champions Denmark, the Pan American Games winners, Argentina, and the Asian Qualification Tournament winners, Japan.

As France and Denmark played the final of the Men’s EHF EURO 2024 and were already qualified for Paris 2024, the direct spot from the European premium competition went to Sweden, which secured the bronze medals, with a 34:31 win over Germany.

At the 2024 CAHB African Men’s Handball Championship, Egypt cruised to a 29:21 win over Algeria in the final, with their six-match winning streak bringing “The Pharaohs” their third consecutive title and a third consecutive Olympic Games berth.

With six teams already qualified, there are six spots open, which will be clinched in March, when the three Olympic Qualification Tournaments take place between 14 and 17 March. 12 teams have qualified for these Olympic Qualification Tournaments in the last year, with the composition of the three tournaments ready to be revealed.

Six spots in the Olympic Qualification Tournaments were reserved for the teams with the best finish at the 2023 IHF Men’s World Championship which did not qualify already for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. With hosts France finishing second, that meant that teams ranked third to eighth secured these spots.

From those sides, Sweden (4th) and Egypt (7th) made it directly to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, via the EHF EURO and the CAHB African Men’s Handball Championship spots, therefore the ninth and tenth-ranked teams from the 2023 IHF Men’s World Championship progressed to the Olympic Qualification Tournaments.

Spain (3rd), Germany (5th), Norway (6th), Hungary (8th), Croatia (9th) and Slovenia (10th) were the six teams sealing their spots in the Olympic Qualification Tournaments via Poland/Sweden 2023, with six other teams joining them.

The 2023 IHF Men’s World Championship was also a seeding competition for the best continents in the world. The first-ranked continent (Europe) and the second-ranked (Africa) received two more places for the tournament. The third (Asia) and fourth (South and Central America)-ranked continents received one place each.

The top two-ranked sides from the EHF EURO 2024, which had not already sealed a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games or the Olympic Qualification Tournaments also progressed to the latter competition, with Portugal, which finished seventh, and Austria, the eighth-placed side, also earning their tickets to the Olympic Qualification Tournaments.

With Egypt sealing their place to the Olympic Games, Algeria (second) and Tunisia (third) also made it to the Olympic Qualification Tournaments, after making it to the podium at the 2024 CAHB Men’s Handball Championship.

The Olympic Qualification Tournaments quota was completed by Brazil, which finished second at the 2023 Pan American Games and Bahrain, which was on the second place in the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament.

The three Olympic Qualification Tournaments will take place between 14 and 17 March, with the hosts due to be announced over the next days. The top two sides in each tournament, due to be played in a round-robin format, will seal their tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Knife attack wounds 3 at Paris's Gare de Lyon train station, police rules out terrorism

CRS and DGSE assume every digruntled domestic wannabee wil be on the'qui vive'

Terrorist attack during Olympics would be 'very badly perceived by public opinion worldwide' - France 24

While I look forward to a peaceful Olympiad it will be a target

There is no "plan B" for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games, the French sports minister said on Monday, after a man armed with a knife and hammer killed a German tourist and left two people wounded near the Eiffel Tower on Saturday. "We have no plan B, we have a plan in which there are several sub-plans with a certain number of adjustment variables," Amelie Oudea-Castera told France Inter radio. The 26-year-old suspect, a French national arrested after the attack, had pledged allegiance to Islamic State in a video recorded beforehand, anti-terrorism Prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard said on Sunday.

The attack occurred on the Quai de Grenelle - a spot also included in the plans for the opening ceremony. Asked if the government was mulling a change to its plan to hold the ceremony on the River Seine, with several hundred thousand spectators expected along its banks amid the security threats, the minister said: "This not something we're working with." "We have the capacity to secure the event", she said, adding that certain details, including the number of additional cultural events surrounding the main spectacle and said the security perimeter would be adjusted closer to the Games.

France has been on high alert since raising its security threshold in October, when a Chechen-origin man with a knife killed a teacher in a school in northern France. For more on the Olympic security concerns following the Paris knife attack, FRANCE 24's Mark Owen is joined by Dr. Jean-Loup Chappelet, Professor of Public Management in the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP) at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.

Conner Mantz and Fiona O'Keeffe raced to victory at the 2024 U.S. Olympic marathon trials on 3 February in Orlando to secure their spots on this year's Olympic team ahead of the Paris 2024 Games.

In the men's race, Mantz crossed the line in 2 : 09 : 05, directly in front of training partner and close friend Clayton Young, who crossed the line in second place just one second later. Young has also secured a quota for Paris having previously run the Olympic entry standard at the 2022 Chicago Marathon. Leonard Korir ran 2 : 09 : 57 to finish in third.

In her first marathon ever, O'Keeffe took a hugely impressive win in the women's race, breaking the U.S. Trials record with a time of 2 : 22 : 10.

French Interior minister Gerald Darmanin said Wednesday that some 300,000 spectators will be able to attend the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics, about half the size of what was originally planned.

The giant show on the River Seine on July 26 will mark the first time that an opening ceremony is held outside of a usual stadium setting.

It will also involve a massive security operation, with tens of thousands of police officers and soldiers deployed.

The athletes will be paraded through the heart of the French capital on boats on the Seine along a 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) route. Both banks of the river will be lined by spectators, behind multiple security cordons.

In both the Rio and Tokyo Olympics, Australia’s swimming squad clinched gold in the 4x100m free relay in the women’s category. Madison Wilson turned out to be an important member of the gold-winning Australian relay team. So on that estimate, the fans were expecting to see her along with Cate Campbell for one last time on the same team. However, that wish faced a stumble in the latest Instagram post of Madison.

On February 1, the 29-year-old swimmer announced her pregnancy news on social media. “The 2 becomes 3. What a journey ours has been, we are excited to announce we are expecting our rainbow baby in 2024”, the captivating IG post disclosed.

Last year, the 2x Olympic gold medalist announced her engagement with Australian cricketer Matt Short. Both the swimming and cricket community had filled the occasion with special wishes. Noting that, Madison added “It has been a whirlwind 12 months and we are so excited for what the future holds” in the same post. With the pregnancy news, the chances of her withdrawal from the Paris 2024 Olympics are looking likely.
