Women's College World Series: Oklahoma completes unprecedented NCAA 4-peat by finishing off Texas

Texas softball might have been the No. 1 seed in the Women's College World Series this year, but Oklahoma was the juggernaut. And that juggernaut made history Thursday.

The Sooners defeated Texas 8-4 in Game 2 of the WCWS to complete an unprecedented four-peat of NCAA softball titles. It is the Sooners' eighth title overall and their sixth in the past eight tournaments. All have been achieved under legendary head coach Patty Gasso, who tied Arizona's Mark Candrea for the most NCAA rings by a softball coach.

It was a win in which Oklahoma dug deep. Its top four hitters accounted for only three hits total, while its bottom four hitters went a combined 7-for-10, led by three hits by senior outfielder Rylie Boone. And after a complete game by Kelly Maxwell, the Sooners used a WCWS championship series-record five different pitchers to reach seven innings against Texas, including Maxwell.

Tiger Woods prepares for 1st appearance at U.S. Open since 2020

Tiger Woods, who last made the cut at the U.S. Open in 2019, said Tuesday that he likes that this week's tournament will be played in Florida-like heat, which will help his surgically repaired back and right leg.

Weather forecasts call for temperatures in the upper 80s to mid-90s later this week with little chance of precipitation, which should help Woods stay loose.

"It's like home," said Woods, who lives in Jupiter, Florida. "Hot and humid is what we deal with every single day at home in Florida, so that's nothing new. It's just making sure that I keep hydrated and the mental tax that the heat will bring. It's going to bring it to all of us, not just me. Everyone is going to be tested."

Woods, 48, will be making his first appearance in the U.S. Open since missing the cut at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York in 2020.

"I feel like I have the strength to be able to do it," Woods said Tuesday, when asked if his body is good enough to compete and win. "It's just a matter of doing it. This golf course is going to test every single aspect of your game, especially mentally, and just the mental discipline that it takes to play this particular golf course, it's going to take a lot."

    Great Britain wins Halifax SailGP

Emirates Great Britain has taken the win in a weather-hit final at the ROCKWOOL Canada Sail Grand Prix held June 1-2 in Halifax, NS. For driver Giles Scott, it was his first SailGP victory since stepping into the driver’s seat in January of this year.

Emirates Great Britain thrived in tumultuous conditions, posting top five scores in all qualifying races before clinching victory in the winner-takes-all Final ahead of France and Spain, who finished second and third respectively.

The victory is momentous for Scott who has come under fierce criticism for his poor performances since replacing sailing great Sir Ben Ainslie, but this win moves Emirates GBR up to sixth on the overall season standings, now 13 points off third as all teams push towards the lucrative $2 million Grand Final in San Francisco in July.

“A win at any league event is huge and certainly for me, personally, to come off the back of a pretty frustrating apprenticeship in SailGP,” shared Scott. “To come out with a win here is massive and it’s nice to be able to put a marker down and prove that you’re capable of winning.”

    Halifax Final Results

    1. Great Britain (Giles Scott)
    2. France (Quintin Delapierre)
    3. Denmark (Nicolai Sehested)
    4. Spain (Diego Botin)
    5. New Zealand (Peter Burling)
    6. Canada (Phil Robertson)
    7. Australia (Tom Slingsby)
    8. Germany (Erik Heil)
    9. Switzerland (Nathan Outteridge)
    10. United States (Taylor Canfield)

King's Birthday Honours: Mark Cavendish given knighthood

Cavendish knighted in King's Birthday Honours

Cyclist Mark Cavendish has been given a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours.

Cavendish won the men's road race at the 2011 World Championships and has sprinted to a record-equalling 34 Tour de France stage wins, matching Eddy Merckx's haul.

The 39-year-old from the Isle of Man will try to take the stage record outright at next month's Tour.

"I'm truly humbled to be honoured by His Majesty the King," said Cavendish, whose honour is for services to cycling and charity work.

"It's always been the biggest privilege to represent my country, and seeing cycling as the sport, pastime and mode of transport I've given my life to, grow in Great Britain during the span of my career has given me joy and pride beyond words.

"I'm truly thankful to everybody that has lived this journey with me."

    2024 U.S. Open

Bryson DeChambeau wins 2nd U.S. Open as Rory McIlroy falters

The 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2 on Sunday turned LIV Golf League captain Bryson DeChambeau into a U.S. Open champion again -- and left Rory McIlroy still trying to end his nearly 10-year drought without a major championship victory after arguably the most heartbreaking near-miss of his career.

After watching McIlroy inexplicably miss a short par putt for the second time in three holes on the 18th, DeChambeau hit a difficult punch shot from near a tree root in the native area and into a bunker across the fairway. From 55 yards away, he chipped to about 4 feet and sunk a par putt to finish 6 under -- 1 shot better than McIlroy.

    Prize money

    1st: $4,300,000 -- Bryson DeChambeau
    2nd: $2,322,000 -- Rory McIlroy
    3rd: $1,445,062 -- Tony Finau, Patrick Cantlay ($1,229,051 each)

Homer woman makes Team USA Olympic Cycling roster

Kristen Faulkner has pedaled her way from Homer, Alaska, to the Paris Olympic Games — the 31-year-old was named to the USA Track Cycling Pursuit Team on Thursday.

“I dreamed of competing in the Olympics ever since I was 8 years old, and I saw it on TV,” the Alaskan cyclist said in a Team USA press release. “This is the biggest dream I’ve ever had, and it’s finally come true!”

Considered a newcomer in the sport, Faulkner has only been cycling competitively for four years. Recent success in pro races around the world earned her the Olympic spot, claiming three Grand Tour stage wins in two years and winning the 2024 Pro Road Race National Championship in May.

“I am beyond excited to represent the USA alongside such a strong group of athletes,” Faulkner added. “I will do my best to bring home a medal for Team USA!”

Learning how to balance on a bike around the Homer Spit, Faulkner departed from Alaska for boarding school on the East Coast at 14 years old before becoming a collegiate rower at Harvard University. After graduating from the Ivy League school in 2016, Faulkner entered the world of finance.

“I first got off training wheels in Homer, Alaska, on this little gravel road with potholes beneath my house,” Faulkner previously told Alaska’s News Source. “I would ride my bike around town just for fun. I would pretend to have errands to do and I didn’t have any errands. I just wanted to go ride.”

The Track Cycling Women’s Team Pursuit qualifying race is scheduled for Aug. 6 at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Simon Yates, Dylan Groenewegen and Michael Matthews cover Tour de France bases for Jayco-AlUla

Jayco-AlUla are stepping into the Tour de France with the trio of Simon Yates, Dylan Groenewegen and Michael Matthews to cover the bases as they chase both the overall podium and stage victories at the race from June 29 to July 21.

Yates, who last year was fourth overall, will once again lead the general classification charge with key support rider Chris Harper alongside as he hopes to this year break Visma-Lease a Bike and UAE Team Emirates' stranglehold on the podium.

“It is always exciting to be getting ready for the TDF and we’re feeling confident going into the race with a similar team to 2023,” said Yates in a team release. “After last year with two close second place stage finishes and fourth overall, it would be nice to get on to the top step and overall podium.

“I have held the leader’s jersey in the Giro and Vuelta and podiumed overall in both but not in the TDF yet. That’s a big goal of mine,” said the rider who is reportedly looking to move on from the Australian team next season.

Groenewegen – who in his two Tour de France appearances since joining the team has netted a stage victory, two seconds and a third – will once again line up for the sprints with the return of Caleb Ewan to Jayco-AlUla never putting Groenewegen’s position in this year’s squad in question. The Dutch rider has delivered three wins so far this season, the latest coming on stage 1 of the Tour de Slovenia but at WorldTour level races, finding the podium has been his best outcome.

“I have had some wins this season, but also a lot of second and third places,” said Groenewegen. “I know the speed is there and I want to get it right at the Tour.”

The pure sprints may be the domain of Groenewegen but the versatility and fast finish of Matthews – who has also had a number of near misses this season with the tightest of seconds at Milan-San Remo – will give the team a strong potential stage-winning option beyond the seven or eight sprint stages.
