• Stone breaks tie with 24.9 seconds left, Golden Knights edge Kings

Mark Stone scored the tiebreaking goal with 24.9 seconds to play, and the Vegas Golden Knights punctuated coach Bruce Cassidy's debut with a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.

Arthur Kaliyev tied it for the Kings with 7:02 left, but the Knights capitalized in the waning seconds after the Kings made an ill-advised move up the ice instead of running out the clock for overtime. Chandler Stephenson controlled a turnover at mid-ice and carried it in for Stone, who whipped a shot past Jonathan Quick to cap Vegas' three-goal third period.

"We had our breakdowns, but that's just learning curves,'' Stone said. "If we can cut those in half, we'll get it done. Power play got a little talking-to in between periods there. We stepped up for it in the third.''

• Lightning fall flat against Rangers on opening night

An offseason can make for short memories, and in the closing minutes of the Lightning’s 3-1 loss to the Rangers on Tuesday night, the crowd at Madison Square Garden started serenading the opponents with the chant, “Igor’s better.”

The NHL kicked off opening night with a rematch of the last season’s Eastern Conference final, allowing fans to revisit the debate of who is the league’s best goaltender between the Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy, with two Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe and a Vezina on his resume, and reigning Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin.
