Claudio Ranieri sacked by Leicester, say reports

Media reports state that Claudio Ranieri has been sacked from his position as Leicester City manager.
The news comes just nine months after he led Leicester to the unlikeliest of Premier League title wins.
Earlier this month, the Leicester board announced their "unwavering support" for the Italian.

"In light of recent speculation Leicester City Football Club would like to make absolutely clear its unwavering support for its first team manager Claudio Ranieri," the club stated on February 7.
"While there is a collective appreciation from everyone at the club that recent form needs to improve, the unprecedented success achieved in recent seasons has been based firmly on stability, togetherness and determination to overcome even the greatest of challenges.
"The entire club is, and will remain, united behind its manager and behind its players, collectively and firmly focused on the challenges ahead."
The club have yet to confirm his departure.

I can't imagine celebrating a 2-1 defeat in Seville like it was a victory, having been absolutely battered for 90 minutes, went down too well with the owners either.

Still, a sad end to an unbelievable story.

Seville had nearly 30 shots on goal, cant blame em for celebrating that priceless away goal.

I wonder who Leicester have got lined up,
Martin O Neill would be the man i'd want if i was a fan

Leicester's result against Sevilla was obviously a pretty good one.

Presumably this decision was made beforehand based solely on their dire league form.

I can't imagine the Thai owners were looking at an important away goal though, Cyrille. As far as they're concerned it's 7 defeats in 9 games (including a replay win against Derby in the cup) and another performance where they were awful. They were very lucky to get away without another hiding.

I saw Carragher making some interesting points a few weeks ago in which he said we shouldn't be surprised at their form this season; the squad is largely made up of players who just aren't very good, but who all played out of their skins for one ridiculous season last year.

Well yes, it was their performance last season that was inexplicable not their performance this season.

In fact this is exactly what the likes of Gary Lineker were expecting last year.

As I said, it seems likely this was decided before the Sevilla game.

So it was a Thai decision. How surprising. Maybe a bit of face lost.

Claudio Ranieri: Sacked Leicester manager says his 'dream died' - BBC Sport

In explaining the club's decision, vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said "long-term interests" had been put above "personal sentiment, no matter how strong that might be".

BBC Sport understands some players were summoned to meet the chairman after the defeat by Sevilla, and Ranieri's fate was sealed by the negative reaction.

If you love to boil everything down to nationality-based cliches.

However the league position they are in and the financial disaster that relegation can be provide more concrete reasons.

They should have at least used some prize money to get a few top players in.

The British model is awful... I prefer the German idea where a supporters club maintains a 51% stake.

    This decision seems quite weird...

It's an economic decision, nothing else.

“Disgusting,” former England and Leicester player Gary Lineker said of the decision taken barely two weeks after the owners had given the Italian boss “unwavering support” despite the team’s troubles. Amid reports of a breakdown in the relationship between Ranieri and senior Leicester players, the British press took a severe line against the owners who announced the bombshell sacking late Wednesday.

“Leicester’s owners were snakes claiming to support Ranieri,” said a Daily Mail tabloid commentary. “Ranieri reign ends in cruel, brutal fashion,” said the Guardian. The Sun tabloid said that Ranier’s relationship with key striker Jamie Vardy and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel had broken down. But its commentary said the “flops” who cost Ranieri his job should lose their Premier League title medals. The sacking stunned all of English football after Leicester’s extraordinary exploit in winning the Premier League title by 10 points last season. “I shed a tear last night – I shed a tear for Claudio, I shed a tear for football and I shed a tear for my club,” former Leicester stalwart Lineker, now a television commentator, said on BBC radio. “It is inexplicable to me, it’s inexplicable to a lot of football fans who love the game and I suppose you can explain it in terms of a panic decision and for me a wrong decision and it is very sad,” he added. The 65-year-old Italian’s position has come under intense scrutiny this season during a slump that has left the Foxes just a point above the relegation zone. “Claudio, appointed City manager in July 2015, led the Foxes to the greatest triumph in the club’s 133-year history last season, as we were crowned champions of England for the first time. His status as the most successful Leicester City manager of all time is without question,” said a club statement announcing the board’s decision. “However, domestic results in the current campaign have placed the club’s Premier League status under threat and the board reluctantly feels that a change of leadership, while admittedly painful, is necessary in the club’s greatest interest,” the statement added. Leicester vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said ditching Ranieri had been the hardest decision the owners had made but one they had to take when, with 13 games left to play, there was still a chance of Premier League survival. Assistant manager Craig Shakespeare and Mike Stowell will take caretaker charge ahead of Monday’s match against Liverpool. Another Italian Roberto Mancini is among names mentioned as a possible successor, along with Guus Hiddink, who helped arrest Chelsea’s decline last season, and Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill. The Times said that some players want Nigel Pearson, who was sacked by Leicester’s owners in 2015 to make way for Ranieri, to return.
