    Should I buy an ipad?

Yesterday, I bought our helper's son an ipad A5 to help him at college. Actually, it was a seconh hand one with a pen. His friends have ipads at college. Apparently it's easier to take lecture notes. He and his mum have been a great help, looking after MIL and the dogs as well as on the farm.

Anyway, Mrs Troy is telling me to get one too. The ipad Air 13"
With a keyboard and pen. Much easier to lug around than my laptop, but is it as good?

I only really need something to touch up my photos and to store them on a hard drive. The ability to edit video from my gopro would also be good. Browser is a given as is being able to print from wifi printer.

So do you have an ipad and what do you think of them?

I have an iPad and an iPhone. I had a MacBook too, but I gaveitto a friend as I didn’t use it.

They can talk to each other too.

I don’t own a printer. If I do need to print anything, i use the iPhone and the local printshop. B+W and colour if needed. Print shop does it all for pennies.

I know the iPad has print option, but rarely need it. The sim slot is useful, otherwise just use it instead of a laptop.

My kids have one. I get frustrated with the lack of capabilities vis a vis an MacBook Air. And they are practically light enough to be an almost equivalent weight.

Not a fan of Apple shite for the way everything is designed to extract money, but they are strong in image and video processing.

Thanks for the feedback, attaching pen, sd card and hard drive as well as keeping it powered appears yo be problematic. But I guess I don't need tem all at the same time.
^ I've never owned an Apple, but wife likes her iphone very much. Prefers it to her samsung flip.
A lot of my friends have them and editing video was really easy. Much faster and more options than other tools I've used.
    I'm still undecided.

I have iPad Air 4 with keyboard, its pretty much all you will ever need if you dont have a laptop, but I have a laptop, use the iPad every day, easy to take away with you too....really in this day and age you could do everything on an iPad, at least the screen is bigger than a iPhone.

Would it be difficult with a portable harddrive and the iPad connections?

Personally I hate the apple stuff because I'm used to android so I get confused when it's not the same but if you know your way around iOS you'll be fine.

My daughter's got a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard in the style of a typewriter if you feel the need to keep it old school.

^ You have had both and made a comparison? Or, is that an opinion having used neither, but based purely on price?

Cheaper and like most cheaper things last less than half the time. I’ve averaged 4-6 years out of Apple products, but only managed 2-3 out of Samsung.

I am not an apple person, but I have family who are, and those that have iPads are committed to them and use them all the time. For example, my aunt is all in on apple. She has the iPhone, iPad, and an iMac. The iMac is never used because she is on the iPad all the time.

Just buy one, I am sure you will not regret it.

I have just (reluctantly) stepped a toe into the apple waters after being a long term android user. My doc suggested I needed to get something to monitor aFIb and after a lot of looking around found that the Apple watch was one of the few that would do both on request checks (ECG) as well as random background monitoring for aFib, and is FDA approved. But - that required me to get an iPhone to hook it up to the watch. So far reasonably happy with them both. It also does other things such as blood O2, sleep monitoring. Can take me ages to find what I actually want, but I suppose that is lack of familiarity. Still using my android phone as my main telephone but my boy Says I will be converted soon. Not sure about that - but I did find it pretty cool that I can answer iphone calls on my watch.....

Well it all depends on just how much editing you want to do, and what program you use/will use. "Touching up" jpg photos will be no problem but any serious editing of RAW photos is a completely different ball game, not something you want to do on any tablet. Same for videos, basic editing on a tablet is ok but anything more advanced ? No way.
If you are serious about it and use Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere Pro or any equivalents stick to a laptop.

I had both on my desk for two years, my Samsung tablet easily connected to a BT keyboard and mouse, where apple wouldn't recognize a mouse, so I could use my Samsung just like a laptop. Today, they're just as powerful as a mid range laptop and with Samsung's DEX, it's just like using Windows.

^ All my photos are taken as RAW and I adjust exposure and white balance before creating jpeg. I use Nikon software to do this and any further editing is done using gimp. Lightroom and Photoshop are great tools but I can't justify the expense.

The ipad would just be a first filter, to keep the best shots and store on ssd before deleting the rest. Main editing would still be on my laptop.

I like the apple video editung tools I've seen though. Would like to use these.

Samsung vs Apple is not a "get what ya paid for" comparison. The quality is basically equal on their flagship products. It's BMW vs Mercedes.

I've had a Samsung tab kicking around since 2015 and it's as good as new.

Beats having to dig out your phone. However, I feel like a right twat talking to my watch around other people. Makes me want to look around conspiratorially and whisper “Security! Security!”

IPad is all I am using now. Does the trick. No more computers.
