I just discovered Vila Market, located in Udon Thani about two hrs drive from me.
I have not been there yet, Will go this weekend, but according to their website they have many of the things I was looking for. They also have real Oscar Myer hotdogs and a good deli selection.

Yes. Until the thais fucked up a good thing for me I was able to pop over the bridge connecting Laos to Thailand most weekends for the purpose of shopping for the nitty gritty items from farangland . Prayuth turned that into 2 times a year. The focker. I used to love a weekend in udon. Do some shopping then spank the beers with udon based mates. A lot of Vientiane expats did the same. Apparently it was all about cracking down on visa runners. A loophole they created themselves.had to stop going . I always kept at least 1 land crossing to Thailand incase of medical emergency. Etc

That's the way I grew up eating chili. Mom put the rice and beans to stretch the meal as we be poor folk. I still eat my chili with rice, but instead of kidney beans, I use pinto beans.

Snub's sushi got me wondering if there's any Jap places here that are as good as the Mexican restos. I do miss the eel as well.

(My wife's family are crazy about this nonsense and will regularly drive me to the mainland - from Penang no less - for the "privilege" of eating some crustacean that "tastes better" away from the island yet can be found in any of the great restaurants that dominate the place, which is fucking famous for its food anyway)

The ones above, though looking delicious because of the Sause would probably be messy to eat.
The term splash zone comes to mind LOL , but worth it IMO,
Back in the US me and the wife would get a dozen blue crags and go to town with them. Wife liked the females with the eggs. A fun way to spend an hour or so,
Interesting fact that I did not know and was told when I asked.
Females have a shorter more round apron on their belly, where the males have a more T shaper long apron on their belly.

Agreed, there are several Thai dishes that I enjoy with crab meat, though never in the shell. M'Sahib occasionally buys crab meat in half kilo bags from one of the markets in Phuket town which is always a good move.

In the US when you got 1 dozen, half would be females
and half would be males.

What do you do with the eggs if you dont rat them, do you incubate them and raise the young as your own?

Sorry, I need to be more clear. Now (at least in Indonesia and Malaysia) they are not allowed to sell females while breeding. So you do not get any eggs.

^ i'm in the shell on camp. Who knows what hideous hygiene monstrosity has been picking your Pu. Also, i always think crab is better cold, sweeter and more flavour. About time they woke up to throwing pregnant hens back in the sea in Thailand.

I agree with you re: flavour, but it's just not worth the hassle when in a restaurant. I want to eat my food, not go 10 rounds with it! :)

Well, we live and learn. I have been to Udon Thani many times and lived a couple of years in the province and I still go there now because there is no gin worth the name in my province - yet I never knew there was a Villa! You'd have thought someone in the expat community might have mentioned it over the past few years. Worse yet, I have been to the Landmark Plaza a couple of times and bought my current mobile phone there.

I can't blame myself, I don't know what I don't know.

Usually in Udon I go to Tops in the basement of Central. Next trip I'll take a swing by Villa, although that needs careful planning because the gf is beginning to make comments about her phone not being very new.

Shu you need to start working the environmental angle on her.

I like crab, but it has to be those big size ones, something like a UK brown crab. I seriously cannot be bothered with the local flower crabs.

Must remember to put that on my list for the next UK visit.

I grew up cracking and eating crab.

I come from a family of fishermen and grew up going out on boats in the local sound here. Dropping crab pots to catch Dungeness crab while we fished for Salmon or what ever else we could catch. Dungeness to me is the best crab in the world, and I prefer the local dungey to even Alaskan king crab. It has such a nice sweet succulent flavor that I usually skip the melted butter.

Same here,
Though no professional fishermen, My Dad had a 34 ft Owens with a Chevy 350 inboard. He kept it in Oyster Bay (North shore). As kids and tanagers we would spend a significant part of our summers on the water . . I would put a chunk of fish on my reel hook, and drop it by the rocks, The crab would gab it and don't let go until you pull it out of the water, so you needed a net, once you brought it close to the surface you would scoop it with the net. Some times you could quickly get a dozen that way. That and a bunch of muscles from the rocks and a few porgies you had a nice meal. For those who did not want to bother, The fish market in Freeport on the south shore where the fishing boats came in , was heaven for seafood lovers.
I feel sorry for the kids growing up today, with their play stations and Iphones, they don't know what fun is.

My father used to take me , I can just see him with his big straw hat and red from the sun neck.

I don't like sharing personal stuff here because of trolls. But you are lucky to have had your parents as long as you did. I didn't have the same luck. I still have my mom, but she no longer knows who I am (Alzheimer's). To walk into a room and see your mom/mum look at you like a total stranger is one of the most gut-wrenching awful things I would never wish on my worse enemy.

My Dad had made a rake that had a wire basket behind it, you would rake the sand and it will all fall in the basket , then when you lift it the sand would go out of the wire basket and what remained was the clam. He had a basket that fit inside the inner tube, that he had tied to himself with a rope and floated next to him,
We would dump the clams in the basket,
