I expect this to only go a few days as the answer will need to be shown. I do have the answer. (I think it says 79% will get this wrong).

Gotta be 22
I get 19.
Aha observation not math skills.
As part of the 79% I reapply for 41.

12 or possibly something completely different, depending on the value of 1 shoe or telescope. Is it half the value of 2 items or some other value?
it's 43

the geezer in the last line is holding bins and wearing boots and there is only 1 boot in the line.
and you multiply before adding.
so its boot + ((geezer+bins+boots)x2)
5+((5+4+10)x2) =43.
5+(19*2) = 43
1 boot = 5
1 man = 5
1 telescope = 2
3 boots (15) + 1 man (5) + 2 telescopes (4) = 24.
24 multiplied by 2 (1 telescope) = 48.
winter is ending
she can see with the telescope that it will get warmer so he has moved toward wearing spring boots

so op, what is the correct answer then, it certainly isnt 20.
seems there are 2 possible answers to this, and one of the answers is in the hundreds.
when no symbol is present between variables, then you must multiply them rather than add them.
