Firstly, he's not in heat. Only females come into heat. He is being a male, though - randy as hell.
Yes, you should get him neutered. As long as his testes (balls) have dropped it can be done. Not only will it modify this behaviour, there is a decreased risk of other illnesses such as prostate cancer.
BTW, you got it the wrong way round, many vets won't neuter before 6 months of age, not after
Edit - we have now got experience of neutering females at 8-10 weeks successfully. Unfortunately, for males you still have to wait for those balls to drop - around the 6 month mark. Once they have adult teeth, they're usually fit to be castrated/spayed. And get the vaccines done, too. They're literally lifesavers here in Asia.

^ Cheers NR.
How do you know if the balls have dropped? I see them, so they must have!! (that just sounded bad)

When I was a kid the farmer down the road used to do the cats in a hessian bag with a hole cut in it for access to the critical point and a razor blade. Then a bit of kerosene on the operation site for disinfectant.
None of our cats died but a few didn't come home for a few days after the op.
I wouldn't recommend the old fashioned method when there's better alternatives available now. A light general anesthetic and kitty will be OK. Maybe feeling a bit sore for a day or two, but thats all.
Believe me, you dont want your lovely little kitten turning into a bull headed stinky old tom cat. You'd be doing him a big favour as well as yourself by getting him cut.

Ignore the twats! If you see them & can feel them in the sac, they've dropped. And, yes, sickos, I do occasionally feel animals' balls. I've also treated maggot infested wounds inside penises - want to hear the details? There, that's the morons gone....Originally Posted by phuketbound

To hell with cutting the balls off the damn cat, stick it in a sack and drown the stinking fricken thing. Just my opinion and like all you other a$$holes out there, I have my OWN opinion. Stinken fricken animals cats are, and the owners that let them run loose should be fixed also.

^jeezus, you want a pic of my cat's balls too? Sick fellow!
I had my two cats snipped at six months and was very glad that I did. One of them still has a desire to go out and explore, which leads to a bit of conflict as I won't let him. I do hope this desire will fade. His dopey brother is quite content to sit in the front yard and never shows any desire to climb the walls.
The worst part was returning from the vets, they were totally out of it on the drugs for the next 12 hours. Their initial attempts to walk whilst still groggy were horrible to watch. Also when the drugs wore off they both noticed that something was missing and there were a few pitiful cries which were sad to see.
Fortunately, a few months on both cats seems to have forgotten that that once possessed a pair of balls larger in size than Eliminators.
^Thanks for that sweet story, wtf. That is a big sigh of relief for me. To know that my cat will quiet down at least for 12 hours, and i can get some peace and quiet.
My kitty doesn't really need his balls, as he is a housecat anyway. He won't be shagging anything anyhow.
You know, the thought had crossed my mind, but would never do it. He's the biggest baby in the world. Meows at everything, and sticks to me like glue. Love him!Originally Posted by Eliminator
NR I wonder if you can advise me regarding my Pug.
We just had her desexed and the vet has insisted that we bring her back every second day for injections and covering 5 visits.
I know she (the pug) has had all her shots including heart worm but we are not sure as to what these 5 injections are and after the operation.
Wonder if you are aware what these injections are as the vet seems to be giving us the run around.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
In case anyone else is interested, I found a good article on neutering a male cat.
There is also a slideshow of a feline being neutered.

The injections will be antibiotics to reduce risk of infection. Ask your vet for oral antibiotics & give them yourself (in a lump of canned dog food or sausage or something - easy. You can give them without food, but it's slightly more tricky, if she won't take them in food let me know & I'll tell you). If you have oral antibiotics, no need for the shots. And cheaper.
