Just wanted to get back to folks with an update on the situation with Bonnie and her junk food habit.
I am happy to report that she has taken very well to having her walks on a leash. The first few attempts resulted in not going anywhere as she would not budge. Gradually, she got used to it and as it turns out is much better at it than Val (the black dog). Bonnie does not have a tendency to pull at the leash like Val frequently does. Trying to walk both these dogs at the same time can be a challenge, especially if they get the urge to pull in opposite directions or if the leashes get tangled around my legs.
After a few months of home life, Bonnie no longer seems inclined to get loose from the yard and has not been out on her own for about 2 months now. With no more access to junk food, we're able to control her weight and I think she's lost a kilo or two. She still has a huge appetite and will gobble most any food presented to her.
Yup, me too. They're mongrels.Originally Posted by Sumocakewalk
^^ I have 2 soi dogs ages 6 and 5 1/2, both of which I brought home as small puppies at about 6 weeks. They are a challenge, but also loving and smart dogs. The greatest problem I have is getting them to ignore other dogs, which is nearly impossible.
By comparison, the dogs I had in the USA could be walked on a leash without losing the plot at the sight of another dog. Both are neutered, so I don't know what they're excited about.

Val always goes crazy when she sees other dogs, and that seems to have influenced Bonnie's behavior. Bonnie did not bark at all when we first took her in, but now when Val spots another dog or person walking by the front of the house and begins barking, Bonnie joins in.
When I take them for walks, seeing other people doesn't phase either of them. But when Val sees another dog, particularly an unfamiliar one, she goes nuts. The other day on our walk Val spotted a soi dog and tried to take off after it. When she reached the full length of the leash in her short sprint, she did a back flip and came down with a thud on her side. She was stunned and looked up at me as if to ask "what happened?". I just looked at her and shook my head. On the other hand, Bonnie was relatively calm and seemed curious about seeing the other dog.
cute dogs now in a great home. But it is a hard habit to break. Very hard.
