Thread: Permanent birth control for dogs?

I recently talked to a guy at a pet store who sells the hormone injections for dogs to prevent puppies and he told me that if I give one 1 ml shot three months in a row my dog should become infertile and I will never have problems with puppies again. Last month, I gave one shot and I plan to do it again this month and next. Usually an injection lasts for 4-6 months from what I heard. I'm guessing the excessive amount of hormones destroyes the eggs or something. Will this work or is the guy pulling my leg? Does anyone have experience with this way of 'fixing' a dog?

Actually I heard that an infection comes when you give the shot when she was already in heat or impregnated. You make me worry a bit anyways. Up here in the boonies they don't seem to be real vets. I worry about getting an operation on the dog with these people. If I did go the way of getting her spade how long is the operation and recovery time?

I live in the Ban Nook as well but we have a proper Vet - graduate of Veterinary Medicine from some Bangkok University.

The operation takes ~20 minutes and the dog is sent home with you with a bandage wrapped around its belly thru the hindquarters. One week later, the dog is brought back and stitches taken out. Cost 1,500 baht including a package of antibiotics in case of infection.

Recovery time for my two dogs was a couple days but had to keep them in cages - from running around and getting the bandages dirty.

Find a Vet in the closest decent-sized town and go that route. All in all, better in the long run. Good luck!

Quite a while ago I had chatted with a vet in another province and that person said you could get young dogs fixed. Here I looked into it and they kept telling me the dog has to be older. After about six months they said I could do it but I thought you could do it when they were puppies and it would be easier and cheaper to do. Now the dogs are older so I can certainly do it but it would have been easier to watch them after an operation when they were still small. Any idea how old a dog has to be to do the operation?

What the... Why did you not seek advice prior to medically experimenting on your pet.
The moo bahns and most temples have vet clinicians drop by regularly to spay animals -- it's free...

Tango in case you haven't noticed there are thousands of stray dogs roaming the streets all over the nation. I'm not experimenting on my dogs which you could have figure out if you read my post. The local pet shop suggested this to me. It's what the locals do in this area if they care enough. As for some village or temple program to spay animals it just doesn't exist where we are. I really wish it did.

You may be in a better area where the people manage the animal population. Up here in the northeast, the dog population is out of control. As mentioned in other threads in the past a lot of the stray dogs up here were picked up and sold to Vietnamese or Lao people in times past but in the past year or so the Thai government has cracked down on the people illegally selling dogs and dogmeat abroad so now we've got all these dogs all over the place.

I truly wish the Thai government had a program to deal with dogs, both strays and those with owners, across the nation. There should be more spaying and just more education on the subject in the media. By the way, what province are you in?

My bitch got caught before I could get her spayed. The vet gave her an injection and told me any more would fcuk her up inside. She didn't become pregnant and I had her spayed soon after.
They don't like to spay a bitch until she's had at least one season.

My dog had an extreme allergic reaction shortly after we left the vet clinic that scared the shit out of me.

We had 2 Bitches at my factory injected & now no more puppy shitting all over place

Not true.

At 6 months before the first heat is the optimum time. Similar to a male dog's balls dropping - if you are of the mind to get him neutered, that is the time to perform the operation.

Bitches don't need a season. That's a fallacy. We never waited until as old as first season to spay pups.
I personally would never give a hormone treatment to a female dog. It can cause pyometra or cancer.
IMO the only worthwhile birth control method for dogs is surgical - spay & neuter and should be had done by all responsible dog owners
