I'm currently drinking a 5l Sth African red- MontClair, 950 bht. It's drinkable, unlike some of the cask wines. My favourite cask wine available locally is a Sicilian, LGT I think. Aussie's do OK white wine in casks- reisling & semillon especially, but the reds you can get here are often as rough as guts.
A few years ago I tried one of the Thai wineries products and was so impressed with both the price(since it's not imported) and the quality of the product. Now when I'm in Thailand I only drink wine from Thailand and I've never been disappointed!!
Do you know which one? The only local wine I can say I liked is the Khao Yai shiraz- but then again I hardly ever try Thai wine these days. In spite of it's massive tax advantage over imports it is no cheaper, and certainly didn't impress me. It could be getting better though, as the vines mature- using Monsoon Valley as an example, their early wines should never have been sold to the public imo.
Theres said to be a lychee wine here that could pass as a dry semillon, but not had the pleasure.
I tried a Thai one made from some type of berry the last time I was in Nong Khai. The bloke in the shop said that all farangs like this one as it is dry. It tasted like Ribena mixed with vinegar. When I suggested that it was still too sweet he got all uppity.
Any decent Thai wine I've seen here has been expensive in comparison to a drinkable Aussie or Chilean wine.
Thanks for the tips, I've just started on a glass of red plonk daily and now in the market for a whopping 2 litre.
Yesterday at C4 got advice from the wine girl and after dithering for about 10 mins finally chose a 2 ltr red something Sauvignon for 555, humped it into the trolley and off I went with her on my heels to tell me cannot buy because wrong time must wait 2 hours. Nope, been here a while so was pointless asking why she didn't tell me this before her sales pitch.

The best deal by far is the South African "Mont Clair" in a 5 liter box for 950 bht.
Pretty drinkable.
Available at Tesco, Carefour, and Makro.
If you let the red "breathe" for a while before drinking it makes a huge difference in drink-ability.
[QUOTE][Do you enjoy Buckfast?/QUOTE] No. Generally I wait for dinner to enjoy!
