Thread: Marmite's Beer Reviews

I was in Carrefour yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised by the choice of beer and bread and the prices too. So I thought that I would do a 'Marmite's Bread Review' thread for you all.

Then I had a better plan and decided to do a beer review thread instead. So here it is.

Sadly, most of the beer is lager or pilsner (same same) which are uninspiring brews at the best of times, but my mate Fabian insists that pale beers are very worthy and I shouldn't base my judgement upon Thai beers. Fair enough.

Talking of Fabs, it reminds me of Friday evening when we were in the Dubliner. I asked a waitress if they have Beer Laos. She replies that "This is Thailand, not Laos!" - I really could've put her down given that opening, but I let it slide as the irony would've been completely lost of the poor lass.

Anyway, on the the reviews...

First up is Fürstenberg Premium Lager. I bought this at Carrefour for 67 Baht, which is not too bad for an imported beer. It comes in at 5.3% which is just above the 5% norm.

After pouring, it quickly lost most of its head. This might've been due to the glass having washing up liquid residue or just that the beer loses its head quickly.

It had a smooth, thick taste. There were no real flavours to speak of and the overall impression was that I wouldn't go out of my way to drink another one of them.

Not the most impressive start to the campaign. Let's see what's next in the fridge.

Next up is Krombacher Pils. This comes in at 4.8% and costs 88 Baht at Carrefour.

When poured, it produced a robust, foamy head. As you can see in the photo, it looked pretty good. Maybe the previous beer got that glass nice and clean?

This beer had a well balanced taste. It was lighter than the Fürstenberg and more enjoyable to drink. The 1/2% less alcohol making a marked difference.

I would drink this one again, but it's still nothing special.

6.5 out of 10.

OK, last one for today. Sorry about the blurred photo, but I didn't check it properly.

This is the Veltins Pilsner available from Carrefour for 67 Baht and it is 4.8%.

The head was pretty light, which was unusual for a German beer.

It was much more bitter than the Miller. In fact it was too bitter, as there was no flavour to balance the bitterness. It tasted like it was stronger than 4.8%. I didn't like this one much at all, so I won't bother with it again.

Next time I manage to go to Carrefour, I shall try either the dunkels or the range of Coopers beers (or maybe all of them).

You enjoyed MILLER? This is the firm that they invented taste free beer!!!!!!

Well you've gotta call it as you see it, but I'm afraid imho Miller is one of the few beers in the world that makes Budweiser shine.
At least you didn't buy the Miller Lite.

On to business, good review Marmers but having a person of the English persuasion doing beer reviews is a bit like an Frenchman doing say a review of bath soap.

^ I agree that a Pom doing lager reviews it a bit amiss, as we are used to proper beer with depth of taste and character. I suppose I should've got an Aussie/Kiwi to do it, as these beers are probably pretty good compared with that crap you put out down-under.

Nope. John Smiths is available sometimes, but it's hardly decent.

My criteria for the first four was that they cost under 100 B a bottle. I shall select the next batch on a different criteria.

Because the peas start to complain, and it makes for worse photos.

Anyway, just returned from Carrefour with a couple of Belgians and a couple of Aussies. Will review during the week, as it's against my religion to drink on Sundays.

I really love the Bavarian Beer "Tucher" particularly it's Helles Hefeweizen. Non German Hefeweizens just don't taste the same. Never seen Tucher or Pauliner in Big C though, however there is a decent Austrian restaurant in Patong with a good German Hefeweizen on tap.

I've tried brewing my own and can never seem to get the yeast to fully ferment the sugars out and get a very sweet beer at about 2.5% alcohol. It's a hell of a lot of work cleaning out the bottles before bottling and I gave up on it, I did however have best tasting results by using distilled water as the malt concentrate already contains all the minerals from the original water.
