Bangkrajao - the lung of Bangkok

I checked out this Bangkok oasis today. Will post some pics soon.

Of several Bangkokians I asked about it, only one had even heard of it, which seems ridiculous because it is a jungle smack bang in the centre of bangkok, only about 3-4 kilometres from sukhumvit and sathorn.

Anyway, we caught a taxi from silom to narathiwat, then rama3, then half way over the new double bridge that goes to samrong before heading onto the island (peninsula actually). Its about 5km by 3km in size, and is very sparsely populated, with perhaps 5000 residents.

Once you get to the north of the island, things get really quiet. There are small country lanes remiscent of koh chang if it were flat, and raised concrete sois which are only suitable for walking and bikes running through the jungle. Some of the houses on these sois are amazing because of their tranquility, and yet if you were to stand on the roof you would see the skyscrapers of Bangkok not much more than a stone's throw away.

We ended up at a beautiful park called sri nakhorn khuan kan, which in my opinion in the nicest, most natural, and quietest park in Bangkok (no traffic noise like lumpini and jj, and no noisy fucking radio speakers every 20 metres like Rama IX).

Ten minutes walk from the park is a pier on the river. A 5 baht, 5 minutes trip had us arriving at wat klong toei nauk, very close to lotus rama IV, and back in the noise and hustle & bustle.

It is an amazing place and well spending a day on seeing. I will be back (with my mountain bike)

So could you get there by taking a taxi from the khlong toei mrt station or thereabouts to wat khlong toei nuak, and then from there the ferry you mentioned across the river?

I wonder if any place in bkk sells those collapsible mountain bikes that you can fold up and take on the subway.

that was the way I used it since i always road a bike down to the river and crossed on a boat and then back again.

made sense to me! if u print it out you can turn it around any which way you prefer...

I would presume that a taxi would be willing to take you to that wat! I'd hazard a guess that the boat will take you across the river.

I've seen normal mountain bikes taken onto the BTS before, but never the MRT.

Actually, people have been cycling around this part of Bangkok for years.

Spiceroads and ABC on Sukhumvit Soi 26 both do half day trips around this semi-island, and the price includes rental of a bike. Spiceroads have better bikes, and they're much more professional than ABC.

If you want to do it on your own, you can turn south after Tesco Lotus on Rama IV road (a big junction) and from there keep going until you find the small road that takes you to the boat ferry (20 baht, I think). It's signposted but you'd have to look carefully.

Alternatively you can head along the river on the north bank, and take the ferry down Bangna way (6 baht). If you head to the end of Sukhumvit Soi 50, then take a left, keep going on that road (it's very busy) until you reach a large crossroads at a dual carriageway with lights. If you turn right here you'll end up at the ferry which is next to a temple. The area is called Bangkok Nok.

Glad to see lots of cyclists taking an interest in cycling around Bangkok - we need more.
The truth is out there, but then I'm stuck in here.

There is a place selling folding bikes in BKK but they are 20 inchers and they got only 3 models. I got one myself, very handy little bike.

Of the top of my head cant remember the shop name but i found it through the Dahon website.
Or google Thailand Dahon, first hit
