Fourteen runners from Africa took the top 14 places in the 20th Standard Chartered Bangkok International Marathon at Sanam Chai yesterday with Kenyans winning both the men's and women's events.


The event, organised by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Standard Chartered Bank, is celebrating His Majesty the King's 80th birthday.

The marathon, which started from Sanam Chai on Rajdamnern road and finished at Sanam Luang early in the morning, attracted more than 50,000 runners from around the world including 50 international blind runners.

Kenya's John Chirchir Tubal and Philip Tarus Rolich were the top two men in the men's category, who was clocked 2hrs 18.27 and 2.18.47 respectively. Tanzanian Disdery Lucian Humbo placed third in 2. 19.28. Ten other Kenyan runners took 4th to 13th place.

The best Thai was Mana Mapeng who was placed 15th in 2h 41.39. Thai runners-up were Jirattikan Boonma and Paichayon jenchang.

The women's category saw two Kenyans take first and third places. Fridah Chepkite Lodepa came first in 2.51.42 and Risper Lagal Chelagad third in 2. 55.04. Placing second was a Pole, Wioletta Llyga in 2. 54.24.
The best Thai female runners were veteran Apasra Prasart-hinpimai who came fourth in 3.02.56, Amnuay Kiam-nguluem (8th) in 3. 09.04 and Ketmanee Nutapan in 3. 10.45.
