Phuket Holiday Ends in Tragedy as Helmetless British Man Crashes Motorcycle

Phuket Holiday Ends in Tragedy as Helmetless British Man Crashes Motorcycle

PHUKET: A British man has been killed in a motorcycle crash in the Kamala area of Phuket, north of Patong, on Phuket's west coast.

A motorcycle being ridden by Jason Paul Richards, 40, hit the pavement near the FantaSea show as he headed back towards central Kamala village about 12.30am on Tuesday.

Mr Richards died later, in Patong Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

Friends told police they had been with Mr Richards earlier at a bar not far away. He had been staying on Phuket for about three months.

Phuket's British honorary consul, Mr Martin Carpenter, said today that Mr Richards' family had been notified.

Phuketwan supports Mothers or Motorcycles (MoM), an action group that supports the 100 percent helmet campaign and aims for improved road safety.

Poor guy. Very sad to think he may be alive if he'd worn a lid.

He was a decent guy. I knew him for a short while as he was with the wife's sister for many years. Amazingly enough he visited a friend in a coma for many days in the hospital in Phuket for exactly the same thing in October. I guess that was not enough to convince him to wear a proper helmet and to not go zipping around on his motor bike drunk.

The village will certainly not be the same as he was a unique individual.

Best wishes to his family as I know they have been concerned with his well being for a while now.

LB is likely referring to the 'helmetless' citation in the headline, Socal.

Yeah i know... But 98% of the time, you will be fine without a helmet. And allot of riders die even when they have one on.

Indeed Moog, he made the decision to make the journey without the helmet.

And I'm sure his friends and family wished he had worn it.

Easy to say but unless you were there to witness the event, it's not a fair statement to make.

For all we know he could have been shunted off the road by some koont in a Fortuner.

Nothing is what is seems in Thailand.

I don't understand why people who wouldn't dream of not donning a helmet in the UK, (and not simply because it is is compulsory), are blase about wearing one in Thailand.

Guys should check that their wives are not taking their kids on the back of motor bike taxis with no helmets.

Not many people do actually plan on crashing, but they still wear helmets and protective clothing.

Whenever I am hiring a bike down the islands or up North in the jungles and I see another customer renting at the same time as me I always make a point of stressing them to wear a lid.
You may think I am a little bit kookie for doing it, but if just 1 of them listened and it saved their life, then it was worth it. If they ignore it, then fine. I don't push it down there throats, just a bit of friendly advice that takes 10 seconds.
Case in point. Was in Phuket about 7 or 8 years back and some French dude was hiring. I said make sure you wear your helmet and be careful about sand on the road. Bumped in to him at the airport a week later with a sling and fuck-off bandage on his head.

    RIP Jason.

I hope you went up to him and said 'I told you so' , pointed at his head injury and gave him a big grin.

On my last trip to Hanoi directly in front of me a guy collided with another motorbike and landed head first into the pavement. Sounded like a gun going off when his head smashed into that pavement.

I was walking by the way, Fuker just layed there twitching, he was well foked.

Only cock suckers make an argument for not wearing a helmet.

I have a confession to make... They didn't have full face helmets available the last time I rented a crotch rocket in phuket. So I just waited till later In the evening and went on half pissed runs from patong to kamala. Regular helmets are a fucking hazard if you go over 100kph because they flip back and joke u or they flip forward and blind u. So I had to wait till the cops where sleeping.

Stop using motorbikes and cars. Stop using mobile phones. Stop fueling the corrupt system. Stop using oil. Open your eyes.

    RIP dead guy.
