A MAN who posed as a Phuket policeman and allegedly abducted and raped as many as 13 women attracted a crowd of about 200 Nepalese to Kathu Police Station in Patong tonight after his arrest.
Parkbhum Maneerat, 29, a married floor polish salesman with two young children who lives in Phuket City, held each of the women captive in turn and raped them, officers said.
His year-long reign of terror among Phuket's Nepalese community ended when the latest of his victims went to police in Patong.
Officers arrested the man at his Phuket City home this evening and confiscated a Toyota Vigo in which they found a sword.
The latest victim escaped the man by hiding in a 7-Eleven store opposite Patong Hospital yesterday about 4.30pm. Khun Parkbhum followed her into the store, and the store security camera proved crucial to identifying him today.
Five of the man's victims went to Patong police tonight to make statements accusing Khun Parkbhum of rape and abduction.
Patong Police Superintendent Colonel Arayapan Pukbuakao said police would compile the complete case against Khun Parkbhum and that the likelihood was that he would serve a long period for each count.
The crowd outside the police station wai-ed the police officers for bringing the reign of terror to an end. President of the Thai-Nepalese Association of Phuket, Phanupong Limbuprasertkul, 42, said the community was grateful to have the man finally arrested.
Khun Parkbhum's method, posing as a police officer, was to threaten the women with exposure or that he would end their permission to stay in Thailand if they did not accompany him.
The latest victim told police that she had been raped about 15 times after being abducted and taken to Krabi on Thursday. Khun Parkbhum confessed after being arrested.
